All Tau action

Loved that the imperium is not a major feature in this book. Loved the focus on bonding kinship that exists in Tau. Loved hierarchical interactions and felt that we were getting a real taste of what it takes to achieve a galaxy-spanning tau empire.

Didnt like the action sequences as most tau fighting involves ‘super suit’, ‘jetpacks’, and ‘pulse ____’.

No ‘Wit’ to be found

Apparently, in order to be funny/fun, characters have to be dumber than the average human.

Doesnt work or make sense if they then have to go into space, fight monsters, interact with ai’s…. Who are also dumb.

I guess if the entire universe is ‘dumb’ what else is there to do but laugh

Just remove Manus from the story

And you have a decent space marine battle set in 30k. Manus himself is prominent, however there is no ‘story’ here since the intro and conclusion punchlines are the same.

Mid quality Alpha Legion

If you replaced “traitor” with “loyal”…. And “alpha legion” with “deathwatch”, youd have a deathwatch book.

The whole point of the alpha legion is ultimate secrecy. In this plot, secrecy is ‘put to the side’ to meet ‘the greater threat’.

This is a trope all mid quality 40k books fall into and the plethora of 4/5 star reviews are unearned imo.

The reader cant pronounce ‘Barack’, ‘Versailles’, ‘Exposé’

Solid 4-star

Fun book with references and appearances of characters we love from the Emperors Children. The moments of demon and tyranid insight are the peaks of the book for me. Conclusion was written on the wall for any vet of 40k so the ending wasnt 4-star, more like 2. Would read if youre like me and want to consume background material for any faction. Would not read if youre looking for a mini-series or if you are a fan of other Emperors Children protagonists.

It’s Space marines versus necrons in the beforetimes when Guilliman is still asleep. Worth listening for cool space marine moments. Base humans are only there to connect the different moments of the “war”.
