An undercooked yet still limp noodle story
Revisado: 12-01-24
I thought I would like this. It has dragons and magic! What's not to love?! Well, let me tell you.
The narrator was my first issue. It sounds like she's speaking to a metronome. She chops up words with syllables in unnatural places. It was easier to listen to her slightly sped up. You do get used to it by the second book so it's not THAT bad I guess. Bad enough I will make sure not to buy anything she narrates again though.
Onto the story. These dragons and nobles are limp noodles. They don't really do anything for fear of upsetting others. What? Full blown attacks by our enemies? Meh, we don't want war so we don't want to start a conflict. Even though a conflict is currently going on. There are SO many holes and unfinished ideals throughout the book. Rules just change for no apparent reason. The idea of the story is good, and I did finish it so it wasn't a single star rating, but it feels like the idea of an idea before it really hit paper and got refined into a real story.
There are SO many issues with the writing style in general. For example, the main character refers to her mom as "the woman", "Ardis", "Mother" and "ma" all in the same page. I was quite confused at first because it reads like there are multiple people in the room. She does the same thing when talking about or to her grandmother. Now it sounds like there are 8 people in the room instead of the actual 3. It was quite annoying.
There are other literary gems like "an unconscious wan looking queen laying unconscious in her bed."
The writing is just THAT bad.
I may have been able to dismiss that if the story and characters were otherwise cool but they were all weak. They rarely stood up for themselves, No real friendships were formed, so you don't ever really care about anyone else in the book. When some of them died it wasn't sad but more of a "who was that?" situation. The main two characters that were 16 and 17 years old had the maturity and intelligence of 9 year olds. They couldn't figure out the most painfully obvious solutions to things.
I understand that this book is intended for a younger audience and I appreciate that, but younger doesn't need to mean half baked and that's exactly what this book was.

There is no plot to this book.
Revisado: 06-13-24
There is no story here. The entire book is just an excuse for adult scenes, and in a VERY cringe way at that. This isn't a normal fun romance. There is NO point to this book, no story. Woman needs to make money. All she cares about is being touched, in a very weirdly desperate way. By anyone. ANYONE. She can't stop thinking about how not touched she is. I would have returned it but unfortunately bought it when it was on sale instead of using a credit. Lesson learned, no more audible sales for me if I can't return something like this.
The narrator is great though, so there's that.

But this year Scarlett's long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend.

Everything about this story was enjoyable. The characters were awesome, the story felt original and at no point felt slow or boring. The narration was excellent. One of the best books I've listened to in quite a while! I can't wait to start the next book!

Even among special agents, Andromeda Stone is special. Her unique ability to walk in the dreams of others has placed her in the services of a secret government research and defense facility known only as The Agency. She always assumed it was because of her gift that she felt out of place, even among her family; but as she faces an entirely new and dangerous mission, perhaps it's something deeper that sets her apart.

No personality
Revisado: 11-02-23
None of the characters have a personality. Everyone is horribly, painfully polite. Distracting so. That was far more unrealistic than the dreamwalking. The MC whines about feeling guilty constantly yet has done nothing to feel guilty over. If the narrator wasn't decent I would have given up half way through.
The dreamwalking was interesting but barely in the book. This felt more like a rough outline of the idea for a story and not a well developed finished product. I won't bother with the rest in the series, or anything else by this author.

Good enough to read twice!
Revisado: 09-15-23
I really liked the concept of this story. There was enough mystery in what would happen to make it hard to put down. I appreciated the love story without the adult scenes. While it is obviously meant for a younger crowd, I felt it was good enough to be enjoyed by adults as well.
The narrator did a great job.

Historia
Princess Evaraine always knew she would one day wed a stranger, but her arranged marriage to the Prince of Garimore is nothing like she expected. She never anticipated losing her heart to the man she would marry. And she certainly would not have guessed that she’d be leaving him behind within hours of their wedding. After the arrival of devastating news, Evaraine must make her way home in a desperate—and likely doomed—attempt to save her father. One tiny shard of hope remains, but it is a hope that requires her to face the darkness alone.

Mostly just whining and self doubt
Revisado: 09-15-23
The previous books in this series I liked well enough (especially the first two). This one though felt like the author couldn't come up with enough words so just repeated over and over "i don't know how he feels about me, I can't tell him I love him, what if he rejects me?" Followed by the dude thinking the exact same thing. This self-doubt inner monologue between the two main characters was non-stop. Very little actually happened besides that. Wait, I take it back, there was an abnormal amount of tears and crying. Someone was ALWAYS crying.
I get that these books are written for a younger audience and I totally respect that, but that can be done while still feeling realistic. Two adults at this age would not be acting like 12-year-olds and their first crush. The whole book was painful to get through.

So boring
Revisado: 08-03-23
I made it through the first book but I can't finish. I like that it's clean but the characters have no personality. I loved some of the authors other books but this is just painfully boring given she wasn't able to get me to care about a single character.
The narrators are both decent,
I suspect this book would be better enjoyed by children.

Blatantly relentless and twice as deadly, Greyson rules the pack and expands its territory, even though it’s already the largest in the region. I just wish he’d stop interfering with my life. He’s got enough trouble of his own with his incomplete mate bond, but he’s made it his hobby to tease and test me at every opportunity.

Never would have guessed this was the same author
Revisado: 08-01-23
The other books in the Magiford world all drew me in. Within a couple of chapters, I felt invested in the characters. They are fun, funny, and all-around enjoyable. This one, I wondered how much longer until it would get interesting and I was already over 75% into the book. It's missing that something special all the other books have. I would NEVER guess this was written by the same author as the other books.
The inner monologue of Pip just repeated itself over and over throughout all 3 books. To a point where I had to start skipping ahead, it got so annoying.
The narrators did not help. The breathy whispering from Kira Fixx will have me avoiding anything she narrates in the future. It was annoying enough to listen to I finally downloaded the Kindle books. I hoped reading the Kindle books myself would bring more personality to the characters given sometimes you just don't click with a narrator. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.
To be fair, had I not read the other Magiford books I don't think I would be quite as harsh, it's just that this series really doesn't feel like the others in any way. Not the narrators (who were amazing in the other books) or the story. Even characters from the other books that crossed over for these like Queen Leila didn't match that character's personality. She was avoiding an animal? Really? That is the opposite of who she was in the other books. The others I couldn't put down, this I just wanted to be over so I could read something good.

This wraps up the story so perfectly. What happened before in the previous books HAD to happen to get here. The difference in the characters growing up in a totally different environment is so believable and well done.

Really annoying main character
Revisado: 01-25-21
The concept of the story was great but badly executed. I really wanted to like it. I've loved the other Kelly St. Clare books she wrote herself, but this was painful to get through because there were no really likable characters.
The dialogue was bad. The main character acted like a whiney 5-year-old. How many times can a near 18-year-old cry "I hate you" at others? A lot as it turns out. That is the extent of her personality in this entire story. None of the characters really have any personality.
To be totally fair, the narrator gave her an extra bit of whine so maybe if I read it myself it wouldn't have been quite as irritating. All of the other voices in the book were well performed.
