One of my faves
Revisado: 05-02-21
The story: I think this is Leigh Bardugo’s best book, though I love Ninth House as well. Tightly plotted, and Kaz Brekker, Inej and Jesper are great characters.
The audio: It’s great having the voices of the character be more accurate, though it’s a little confusing with the depictions of everyone else being a little inconsistent.

Historia
Pocket Change Collective is a series of small books with big ideas from today's leading activists and artists. In this installment, Beyond the Gender Binary, Alok Vaid-Menon challenges the world to see gender not in black and white, but in full color. Taking from their own experiences as a gender-nonconforming artist, they show us that gender is a malleable and creative form of expression. The only limit is your imagination.

She speaks out of turn, has wild ideas, and can't seem to keep out of trouble. Then Tess goes too far. Tess's family decide the only path for her is a nunnery. But on the day she is to join the nuns, Tess chooses a different path for herself. She cuts her hair, pulls on her boots, and sets out on a journey. She's not running away, she's running towards something.

He had nothing to recommend him but his smile, and she was surely too old, and had too much commonsense, to be beguiled by a smile... Miss Abigail Wendover's efforts to detach her spirited niece Fanny from a plausible fortune-hunter are complicated by the arrival in Bath of Miles Caverleigh. The black sheep of his family, a cynical, outrageous care-for-naught with a scandalous past - that would be a connection more shocking even than Fanny's unwise liaison with his nephew!

One of my favorites!
Revisado: 02-10-09
Garth Nix is one of my favorite fantasy novelists. Sabriel begins with a young woman leaving school after she receives a message that her father is in danger. She must travel into the Kingdom, across the Wall, and enter Death to find her father. In this fantastic three-book sequence, Nix creates an extraordinary world, full of magic and horror. Parents, if you are worried about younger readers scaring themselves, there is a scene sequence early on in Sabriel that is one of the scariest I've read. Definitely worth a pre-read if you're concerned. Tim Curry is my favorite audio book reader and he outdoes himself in this sequence!

Scary and intense
Revisado: 02-10-09
I've enjoyed all the Delany books, although I prefer the title the "Spook's Apprentice" to the Americanized version. It's a great sequence with many chills and horrors. Not for the faint of heart, and parents, if you're concerned about younger readers scaring themselves, I'd recommend a pre-read. Lots of discussion of witches, ghosts, and bad ghoulies.

The Burning Question
Revisado: 12-15-08
Flanagan does it again in this tidy little continuation to his Ranger's Apprentice sequence, begun in The Ruins of Gorlan. Once again, the need to get information back to the king leaves the young Ranger apprentice Will and his companions Horace, and a lady's maid named Evanlyn alone in their attempts to save the country of Aranluan from the deadly plans of Morgarath.
The final question, as always in a sequence of this energy and excitement: what will happen to Will next?
The Ranger's Apprentice sequence is a wonderful example of the best type of Apprentice stories - both grounded in adventure and also the ordinary details of practice and learning necessary to become masterful at a given craft. Readers who enjoy Flanagan may also enjoy the Spook's Apprentice series and the Skullduggery Pleasant books.
