Historia
It's no secret that liberalism didn't always live up to its own ideals. In America, many people were denied equality before the law. Who counted as full human beings worthy of universal rights was contested for centuries, and only recently has this circle expanded to include women, African Americans, LGBTQ+ people, and others. Conservatives complain that liberalism empties the common life of meaning. As Francis Fukuyama shows in Liberalism and Its Discontents, the principles of liberalism have also, in recent decades, been pushed to new extremes by both the right and the left.

Reading to think
Revisado: 08-31-22
One reason I read is to stimulate my thinking. Deeper is good. Broader is good. A different “lens” is good. Having listened to what Fukuyama has to say on liberalism, I am encouraged to buy the hard copy of his book and to encourage my grown sons to read it so I can obtain their reactions and conclusions and to refine my own.
This is an excellent book. Thoughtful and accessible.

Historia
Twenty years ago, Ken Auletta wrote an iconic New Yorker profile of the Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, who was then at the height of his powers. The profile made waves for exposing how volatile, even violent, Weinstein was to his employees and collaborators. But there was a much darker story that was just out of reach: rumors had long swirled that Weinstein was a sexual predator. Auletta confronted Weinstein, who denied the claims. Since no one was willing to go on the record, Auletta and the magazine concluded they couldn’t close the case.

“Monster”
Revisado: 08-30-22
A very thorough examination of Harvey Weinstein as a powerful film maker and twisted seeker of power.
Auletta’s recounting is both absorbing and, necessarily, repulsive.

Historia
By official accounts, the Navy SEALs of Alpha platoon returned as heroes after their 2017 deployment to Mosul, following a vicious, bloody, and successful campaign to drive ISIS from the city. But within the platoon a different war raged. Even as Alpha’s chief, Eddie Gallagher, was being honored by the Navy for his leadership, several of his men were preparing to report him for war crimes, alleging that he’d stabbed a prisoner in cold blood and taken lethal sniper shots at unarmed civilians.

Seals: Extraordinarily Brave and Disciplined or “Pirates”
Revisado: 11-23-21
A SEAL team is deployed in 2017 to Mosul where ISIS is wreaking havoc.
ALPHA team’s senior leader is Eddie Gallagher.
Eddie has fierce loyalty from his team.
Except, in Phillips’ recounting, Gallagher has become a law unto himself.
He confesses to killings, in particular, to the stabbing of a 17-yr old Iraqi who has been captured.
This is a war-story, a unique culture, a PR campaign involving the President, and, finally, a trial room drama.
The soul of the SEALS culture is at stake.
A compelling listen with moral dilemmas aplenty.

Once an Eagle is the story of one special man, a soldier named Sam Damon, and his adversary over a lifetime, fellow officer Courtney Massengale. Damon is a professional who puts duty, honor, and the men he commands above selfinterest. Massengale, however, brilliantly advances his career by making the right connections behind the lines and in Washington’s corridors of power.

Sam Damon’s character is irresistible. Myrer uses him as a prism through which the great conflicts of the 20th century are refracted. Philosophy, relationships, morality are all addressed in a sweeping narrative.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Larson: A superb story teller and historian
Revisado: 07-02-20
Mr. Larson’s books all reflect his ability to take a fresh and deeply human approach to his subjects.
The Splendid and the Vile has familiar characters and those less well known (e.g., Colville, Thompson).
The characters are brought to life vividly.
I cannot wait for his next effort.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

A fascinating, well-told story.
Higginbotham’s account is scrupulously researched and his narrative uncovers all the human drama in the waning years of a failing USSR.
Jacques Roy’s narration is pitch-perfect.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Chernow’s “Grant” is superb
Revisado: 12-22-17
Chernow claims to be a slow reader and quips “I could never finish one of my books”.
This book is a serious investment of the listener’s time, but, in my opinion, well worth it.
Chernow fully covers Grant’s personal as well as professional, public story.
His subject was only known to me through HS American History and other references focused on the Civil War and, to a lesser extent, the Reconstruction.
So, as Chernow unveiled Grant, it was largely new or only faintly remembered.
Chernow’s writing style lends itself admirably to the oral narrative format.
The reader’s rendering seems to capture Chernow’s nuances perfectly.
I learned a great deal and had nearly fifty hours of listening pleasure.
Impressive, informative and entertaining. Quite an achievement.

Historia
Aliquippa, Pennsylvania is famous for two things: the Jones and Laughlin Steel mill, an industrial behemoth that helped win World War II; and football, with a high school team that has produced numerous NFL stars, including Mike Ditka and Darrelle Revis. But the mill, once the fourth largest producer in America, closed for good in 2000. What happens to a town when a dream dies? Does it just disappear?

Aliquippa: The story of industrial America in the 20th century
Revisado: 04-02-17
Price is ambitious, and largely effective in realizing his ambitions, in telling the poignant story of Aliquippa and 20th century industry's rise and fall in America.
Reliance on many personal experiences ,told in the voices of the principals, makes the story more immediate.
The role of football in defining the town is essential to its character.
Barrett's narration is, as usual, excellent.
