Not bad for free
Revisado: 09-13-24
I don't know if it was the story of the narration. It was over the top in a way that felt unnecessary. Especially considering the ending. But it passed the time.

Great narration, subpar story
Revisado: 06-11-24
I really enjoyed the production of the story! That's what kept me listening. Otherwise, I would've abandoned this one based on the subpar plot.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Historia
Set in a middle-class neighborhood in Atlanta in the 1980s, Silver Sparrow revolves around James Witherspoon's two families - the public one and the secret one. When the daughters from each family meet and form a friendship, only one of them knows they are sisters. It is a relationship destined to explode when secrets are revealed and illusions shattered. As Jones explores the backstories of her rich yet flawed characters - the father, the two mothers, the grandmother, and the uncle - she also reveals the joy, as well as the destruction, they brought to one another's lives.

Not bad.
Revisado: 09-20-22
I struggled with both narrators. Both had some sort of lisp that was distracting and the narrator for part 2 sounded as though she was 50 years old whereas the narrator for part 1 sounded age appropriate. The story was very interesting and I really liked the character development of the parents. Good to be able to understand how their lives ended up as they did.
I had no sympathy for Gwen. And as the story unfolded, I lost sympathy for Dana. All in all, it was a good listen.

Great performance- subpar story
Revisado: 07-27-22
I listen to anything Bahni Turpin narrates which is why I picked this book. The performances were stellar. The plot had potential. But it took way too long getting to a climax and even then it left a lot to be desired.

TERRIBLE writing
Revisado: 08-12-21
Predictable and trite. Cassie made me wish she'd fallen into the ocean or off a cliff by episode two. Couldn't make it past that point. The actress playing that role over-acted but she also didn't have much to work with. This is more soap opera than blockbuster movie. It's a no for me.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Great performance. Mediocre main character.
Revisado: 08-02-21
Loved the narration. Wish she'd been given a stronger man character. It was hard for me to root for Gracie because I couldn't relate to her cowardice and her poor decision-making throughout the book. I kept waiting for some growth but by the end she was still the same timid, fearful, spineless little girl she was in the beginning. If she'd used her experiences to grow into a strong woman by the end of the story, I would have given this 4 stars. Oh, well.
