This was an absolute delight! Dominic Monaghan gives an excellent performance as Moriarty, and the whole supporting cast was great. The story was engaging and original and great fun. I definitely hope to hear more from this ensemble.

Historia
A ship. A garden. A library. A key. In Kaleidoscope, the incomparable Brian Selznick presents the story of two people bound to each other through time and space, memory and dreams. At the center of their relationship is a mystery about the nature of grief and love which will look different to each listener. Kaleidoscope is a feat of storytelling that illuminates how even the wildest tales can help us in the hardest times.

Mystical and moving
Revisado: 09-23-21
A fragmented, elegiac collection of short stories by Brian Selznick. These tales are beautifully written and suffused with a yearning, mournful quality.
Stick around for the brief interview with Selznick at the end, in which he explains how Kaleidoscope (a five-year project) came apart and then came together again in the midst of the pandemic. The stories are ostensibly aimed at age ten and up, but I think grown-ups will love them too. In some ways they seem too heavy for children, but after nearly two years of pandemic-related death and upheaval, these gentle tales of longing and loss might resonate deeply with young readers.
Gwendoline Christie’s narration is impeccable.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Great Short Audio Drama
Revisado: 12-23-19
I loved this! I’d never heard of Hertha Ayrton, but she sounds freakin’ awesome. My next job will be to find a decent biography of her life.
This short audio play takes Curie’s notorious affair with a younger, married scientist as its inciting incident and uses that to examine the unreal expectations placed on all women, especially accomplished, talented women.
Both Hertha and Marie suffer the same struggles as many women today - the fight to be taken seriously in their careers, the challenge of balancing those careers with motherhood, and finally, the longing to be allowed to be real, imperfect women with tempers and bad habits and even (gasp!) lovers.
I read many reviews objecting to Francesca Faridany’s bad French accent, particularly in light of the fact Curie was Polish by birth. But surely that was the point of the accent? To convey her voice as a confused blend of her native and adopted tongues? At any rate, the accent didn’t bother me at all.

This was a wonderful idea!
Audible and author Alexandra Silber took her book, which is a sequel to Fiddler on the Roof, and combined chapter readings with songs from Fiddler and several brand new songs.
I’d love to see this become a musical and I’d love to hear more mixed media live readings such as this on Audible.

Loved these quirky, original short stories. They have a creepy undercurrent and a touch of magical realism. If you like writers like Neil Gaiman and Angela Slatter, you'll probably like Kelly Link.

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

The Narrator Makes the Story Come Alive
Revisado: 11-22-12
This is the audiobook medium at its very best. Lenny Henry narrates with lively enthusiasm and a brilliant gift for the many voices of the story. A tropical music soundtrack adds atmosphere to Neil Gaiman's witty, poetic retelling of the legend of Anansi and his children.

Delightful
Revisado: 10-01-12
A collection of vignettes from Eloisa James' sabbatical year in Paris. Delicious recipes, a delightfully precocious daughter, and an adorable prosciutto-addicted overweight chihuahua. Lovely descriptions of the city, the people, and the culture, as well as some moving thoughts on surviving cancer and coping with an aging parent.
Ms. James narrates the audiobook herself and did a great job - she has a very pleasant speaking voice and warm, natural reading style.

Historia
It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ fabricated animals as their weaponry. The Leviathan is a living airship, the most formidable airbeast in the skies of Europe.

A Fun Listen
Revisado: 04-24-12
What did you love best about Leviathan?
I haven't actually finished listening to this story yet, but I'm enjoying the narration so much, I had to comment. So far, the story has been great fun - two very likable teenage protagonists and their adventures in the run-up to WWI. In this alternate history, the Austro-Hungarians have mechanized weapons like clankers, while the Brits have fabricated beasts (genetically engineered crossbreeds). If you like steampunk and modern European history, you should definitely enjoy this. And Prince Alec and Derryn Sharp (a Scottish girl posing as a young airman) should be a great hit with teens. But really, the best thing about this audiobook is Alan Cumming. He is stupendous. He nails all the different accents and conveys the characters' personalities so well through tone of voice -- and he reads the story with such obvious relish. It's a delight to hear. I want him to read ALL my audiobooks from now on. I might even like him better than Jim Dale and Stephen Fry. At any rate, he certainly joins them on my list of absolute favorite narrators.
