I loved and hated it. 5 stars

I have to view it as almost a philosophical exploration of what makes a villian. even the villains that would normally be worse than the evil MC we're more empathetic than the MC in a lot of ways. I wanted to quit during the paladin village bit because it could have been a 5 minutes scene instead of like 60 ish.

in a way it's so horrible that it's almost a critique of the audience for even reading it.

but they also brought it all together in the end, and I laughed out loud, in public, multiple times while listening to it, so I can't really give it a bad review because it delivered a villian MC too well, and gave me lots of feelings.

very similar premise to beware of chicken with the MC who rejects the plot laid out for them for an attempted quiet life, GF and Sapient pets.

The actual execution of that feels very different, like it's a deconstruction of the anime fantasy hero tropes where as BoC is more based in deconstructing xanxia tropes.

I was on the fence about buying and actually bought the book because of the bad review complaining about the swearing just to see if it really ruined the plot, and honestly I was thus surprised to find that it's like PG 13 movie swearing, maybe slightly worse. Also executed in a way where it's just the natural way the guy talks, not really that noticeable had I not been specifically listening for it🤷‍♂️

so so so good.

This story delivers on so many levels, there's the obvious hive queen style story stuff going on, but honestly pretty much none of the tropes go exactly how you think.

I feel like giving specifics would also be spoilery, the title sold me on the story, just because it seems to promise a hive queen premise with a unique twist and it delivers that multiple times over.

Good story ruined by setting needing CW

the story is pretty good, the mechanics are interesting, but the sexism is rampant in the writing, the MC and the setting.

The world the MC is sent to is just chock full of slavery, rape, and mind control. and while thankfully there are no rape scenes, it's talked about and implyed a lot. like, exponentially more than the stereotypical fantasy story. enough that it ruined most of the rest of the plot. and while the MC tries to help, becoming a slaver to fund an orphanage/army is an upsetting way to do it, especially when the story isn't meant to be a "villian" MC.

Even better than book 1

this book massively expands on the lives and potential of all the characters from book 1. it opens up the universe to be bigger and more terrifying and honestly has some of the most memorable superhero/villians of any such universe, Lodestar is the bar almost all superman archetype heros fall short of in my mind, and she's not even the main character, just the most obvious analog to most super-universes.

Great Book

I'm only writing this review in response to the one that said something along the lines of they were canceling thier order of book 6 because they didn't like/get the end of this one. That reviewer is an idiot, the title of the book is the explanation.

I'll try to avoid spoilers but still give the info I wanted after reading the crappy review.

The new characters at the end are people previously uninvolved in the story until the titular Cataclysm, the side effects ripple outward and pull more people and things into the plot. it's obvious why we're finding out about these new people at that point in the story.

super cringeworthy

mediocre parody of batman. highlights the ridiculousness of re arresting super villains over and over, and the sheer arrogance of batmans personality. unfortunately it does so with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

the plot is decent, the main character's super power is often his duchbagery. the sex scenes are the most average normal vanilla sex described like they are somehow revolutionizing the act.

so it's great if a super hero power fantasy is all you wanted, like a B movie in book form, the terribleness being so blatant as to be good if you're in the right mood.

The main reason I gave the story and final review 4 instead of 3 stars is Norma, she's also the main reason I'll still give the next book a shot too.

worried your story is too cheesy? sure you can try and be serious or you can lean into the cheese and story tropes to create one of the most fun litrpg books out there. seriously if you can get past the first stimulated battle in this story without having burst out laughing at least once then you are probably dead inside and immune to fun.

I must also point out that the MC can summon anything that he kills... in a book that clearly has dinosaurs in it... do you really need to know more?

easily the best entry in the series so far.

I will note there are some audio editing errors but I've heard worse ones too so I didn't mark the score down much for it.
