Like it wrote itself
Revisado: 11-28-24
Seriously needed an editor. There were some good elements to this story, which kept me interested and listening to the end. The narrator was excellent. But there was so much to cringe about, so many clichés (a fine figure of a woman? Please) laborious descriptions of food and fashion and sex that did not enhance the story. Much of the dialogue consisted of the characters explaining the obvious to each other. This should have been a better book.

I enjoyed every character and twist. This isn’t a challenging read, rather warm and hilarious and worth every minute spent listening

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Best match of story / narrator ever
Revisado: 05-16-23
I was a little unsure at first, whether I could listen to 21 hours of this narrator’s accent.
Within half an hour, I was completely sucked in, and while I love reading Barbara Kingsolver‘s books, I can’t imagine that reading this one could be nearly as perfect as listening to this story as read. The character is utterly captured. I was utterly captivated.
What a great story!

Almost unreadable
Revisado: 08-28-21
This one is going back.
I had been so impressed by another book by this author, The Nightingale, that I spent all my credits on any others I could get my hands on. After listening to Between Sisters, I had my doubts. Now I feel like the formula of strained sisterly relations has been so thoroughly digested I need never read another. This book is bursting with cringeworthy caricatures- the media hordes, the small town gossips, the simpering women chasing the attractive newcomer, the doctor who depends on Google for her “research.” I found it offensive. The basic story held promise. The delivery was not worth the time it took to listen.

Pretty shallow
Revisado: 12-30-19
I never warmed to the characters, certainly not the narrator. I did listen to the whole book, hoping there would be some redeeming twist. I just found the conclusion shallow and disheartening.

Ah knows it ain' gon' be easy
Revisado: 07-05-17
But for the love of god, edit this monstrosity! The premise is a little interesting but only in a passing, kind of sickly sadly morbid way. There are some interesting characters. There are even some original thoughts. But gawd, the dialogue is drenched in molasses and repetitive to an extreme, not to mention painful to listen to. The reader got the thick southern black stereotyped accents down, and they're still ringing in my head. I don't know why I made myself listen to the entire train wreck- actually I want those hours back.
