Historia
Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the blazing fireplace. There were rides in the woods on Peter the Great, the races with Danny Trevort. Maybe best of all were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars. But there was sadness too - the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister got married, the tragic death of a schoolmate, and the bitter disappointment of her first love. Sometimes it all seemed like too much to handle.

Very old fashioned and sexist
Revisado: 11-03-24
Strange book. A book about a young woman growing up in the 1920s or 30s after her mother dies.
Could have been interesting but it's very old fashioned and very sexist. I also didn't like any of the characters.
Because the writing is somewhat formal and a bit precious, I initially thought the narrator was well suited to the material; ultimately, though, I found the narrator very grating and almost couldn't finish.

Michelle Williams did a phenomenal job. I thought the author's voice came through pretty well.
There were a lot of details missing, but I understand she has a persona to protect and ongoing details with her parents.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

One dimensional
Revisado: 12-31-22
It was interesting enough that I finished, but the author's narration was rushed and had no affect. The mother was also kind of a one dimensional narcissist. If there is a second printing, I think the book would benefit as to more background as to WHY the mother was the way she was, and more family dynamics, generally.

A short and deferential biography
Revisado: 07-20-22
I was disappointed at the length. I also felt it was overly deferential to Musk. He had the last word on everything.
I wish Vance would update this. There is now far more material on just about every aspect of Musk's life.
Since this was done in 2015, it seems very incomplete when read in 2022.

In September 1998, Michael J. Fox stunned the world by announcing he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease: a degenerative neurological condition. In fact, he had been secretly fighting it for seven years. The worldwide response was staggering. Fortunately, he had accepted the diagnosis and by the time the public started grieving for him, he had stopped grieving for himself.

Historia
Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, Susan Gubar underwent radical debulking surgery, an attempt to excise the cancer by removing part or all of many organs in the lower abdomen. Her memoir mines the deepest levels of anguish and devotion as she struggles to come to terms with her body’s betrayal and the frightful protocols of contemporary medicine. She finds solace in the abiding love of her husband, children, and friends while she searches for understanding in works of literature, visual art, and the testimonies of others who suffer with various forms of cancer.

Insufferably self-absorbed narcissist gets cancer
Revisado: 09-25-21
I had read two memoirs about ovarian cancer...Liz Tilberis' and Gilda Radner's. Both excellent with Tilberis' maybe being a bit better in my mind in the sense that she is more likable than Radner, even though I was a huge Radner fan.
(I am very interested in medical topics generally.)
Unfortunately, this author is a self absorbed narcissist who spends 99 percent of the book pitying herself...the book is a litany of complaints and feeling sorry for herself on every subject imaginable: people's comments when trying to talk about her cancer aren't what she wants even when they are trying to be helpful--so she mocks them; her doctors can do no right, the procedures are painful, she'd rather die than do surgeries and chemo because she shouldn't have to subject herself to this--but then she does them and just complains about every imaginable aspect, she hates her mother, why does her elderly mother keep asking her to do things? Etc. She notes that the word chemotherapy contains the word, "mother", and has nothing but terrible things to say about her. (Her father apparently died by suicide.)
She also spends most of the book name dropping various authors and books, which seems snobbish and distracting.
The other thing about this book is that as of fall of 2021, the author is still alive, which makes her constant self-pitying about why she has to do chemo and subject herself to surgical procedures when they can't even cure her, seem that much more insufferable and obnoxious...her doctors bought her many more years. Years for which many people would be profoundly grateful.
There's one small portion of a chapter towards the end when she expressed some gratitude, but it's like a drop of rain in the desert, and evaporated as quickly, before she began complaining again.
Sometimes she acts like she is an advocate for medical research in ovarian cancer, but the book always immediately lapses into self involvement.
I finished it, but it was difficult.
I wish her well in her prognosis, but I would never read anything of this woman's again.

Obsolete after new documentary
Revisado: 07-03-21
I didn't like the narration at all, and more importantly, the new documentary featuring Bundy based off Michaud's book, featuring live interviews with the author and excerpts of calls with Bundy, renders this material obsolete.

Kind of lacking
Revisado: 06-29-20
I find her very likable, but this memoir was not very revealing. In fact, what was strange to me was that I think she was the true believer in Scientology principles, and became bitter when she was not recognized as such, and was eclipsed by Cruise within the Church. I did understand some of the therapeutic appeal of it, although I never would have let them have so much control. Very little about non Cruise scientologists and she seems to have met him only a couple of times. Her career and personal life are also explored only cursorily.....maybe that's a reflection of how much it consumed her....

Fun but ultimately not satisfying; too silly.
Revisado: 08-29-19
Wonderful narrator. Started out great. No spoilers but it starts off interesting, then becomes funny and absurd. So, three hours in, I am loving it. But the end is not satisfying...author can't wrap it up or come to more serious conclusions. Fyi, I am a litigator. The legal plot does not make much sense...
