Historia
Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than 20 years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

Not realistic enough for me
Revisado: 11-04-16
Yes this tragedy can and does happen but no medical professional would have this internal debate interfering with appropriate action. Diagnosis believable but unlikely to be missed as reason for outcome with experienced personnel as characters portrayed . Continues in same unrealistic basis until I quit listening.

Terrible female voices
Revisado: 05-31-16
The book is all right, but the narrator had the same problem that many male narrators do with females voices - they're high-pitched, whiny, and terribly grating on the ears.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

What did you love best about The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks?
I am glad to have learned about the subject, and that made it a worthwhile read for me.
What other book might you compare The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks to and why?
not really any I have read
Any additional comments?
he majority of this book is about the hardships the family suffered after her death and their subsequent emotional responses, affected by ignorance and, for some characters, a quest for greater knowledge.
