Historia
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe.

We are not to believe our lying eyes
Revisado: 10-06-22
This book is a vivid example why credentialed expertise doesn’t hold much credibility any more. Steven Koonin has provided a technical indictment of the climate science international community, United Nations, broad based scientific media, academia, and global advocates of the urgency of the climate crisis. His critique leaves no room for honest disagreement because he insists the lies and distortions of the accused are steeped in foundational, analytical errors that are self-evident. Despite a careful reading of the book, I readily admit I am unqualified to ascertain who is lying…the accused or the accuser, which I suspect is Mr. Koonin’s ultimate motive. We are provided a parting gift where the author recommends we do as little as prudently possible to address climate until we are better able to model and predict it’s effects. I could not disagree more. If the house is burning, we do not need to model the damage in order to know what we should do. I trust what my eyes, ears, nose, skin, speech have helped me to understand…warming is causing degrading biodiversity, crop yields, access to fresh water, and escalating extreme weather events.

The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Historia
Stephanie Kelton's brilliant exploration of modern monetary theory (MMT) dramatically changes our understanding of how we can best deal with crucial issues ranging from poverty and inequality to creating jobs, expanding health care coverage, climate change, and building resilient infrastructure. Any ambitious proposal, however, inevitably runs into the buzz saw of how to find the money to pay for it, rooted in myths about deficits that are hobbling us as a country.

MMT is well understood by our government
Revisado: 12-31-20
MMT is a powerful fiscal policy tool employed by our government for the benefit of the wealthy elites. As the author readily admits, "No one asks how the government is going to pay for (40 years of regressive) tax cuts or (run away) military spending". Coupled with Medicare Part D, tax cuts and military spending are the lead drivers for the explosion of federal debt (1980: $1T vs. 2020: $27T). The deficit myth is merely the well practiced lie told to the American public to justify the denial of fiscal policy that facilitates broad based prosperity. COVID-19 fiscal policy once again proves the point where the Cares Act and the 2nd stimulus package authorized nearly $5T in stimulus for large corporations verses $1.6T for small businesses and the American public. No credible policy maker thinks the second stimulus package is remotely adequate to address the small business failure rate of 29% or the loss of working class jobs ($27k/year or less) of 9.8 million (or down 20% since January 2020). MMT is a powerful fiscal tool that will never be used to serve the American people or restore sustainability to the ecology that supports humanity as long as both political parties are rife with morally bankrupt sycophants who serve only their wealthy masters. This book may have been more appropriately written during the camelot era of the Kennedy administration where "ask not what you can do for your country" could be said credibly by the sitting President.

Historia
It is an axiom of American life that advantage should be earned through ability and effort. Even as the country divides itself at every turn, the meritocratic ideal - that social and economic rewards should follow achievement rather than breeding - reigns supreme. Both Democrats and Republicans insistently repeat meritocratic notions. Meritocracy cuts to the heart of who we are. It sustains the American dream.

The "how" of our disillusionment
Revisado: 08-19-20
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of how merit has produced systemic and increasingly severe wealth & income inequality that serves neither the haves or the have nots. The conclusion provides a thoughtful solution for dismantling the meritocracy trap. My only criticism is the solution merely restores the mutual benefit of the socio-economic system that is unsustainable.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Revisado: 07-18-18
Malcolm Gladwell has written a thoroughly researched, concisely written analysis on the defining characterics of extraordinary accomplishment. The implications of his analysis serves as both a clarion call for transformative achievement and a sobering indictment of our conventional definitions of success.

Revisado: 07-17-18
Read this book and enter a trance of deep spiritual and emotional awakening. With the calmness Echkart Tolle is known for, he shares explosively powerful insights on the self actualization process that is heralding the dawn of a new paradigm. Change is happening. This frightens some people because they completely identify with the virtues of the passing paradigm. The good news here is emergence happens so we can realize our full potential.
