This book resonates so much with my interest and work in queer media representation. To hear so much of it articulated so perfectly was a revelation. I listened to the whole thing straight through in one day. Excellent work!!

I really enjoyed this. He describes stages in a gay man’s development that largely rang true for me (though he does paint with very broad strokes sometimes- occasionally showing a little judgement). He has a lot to say about finding joy and peace in holding ourselves accountable and letting go of the invalidations of others - malicious or innocent. Really good book - highly recommended for queer people struggling to find meaning and who’d like some useful words to beat back unwelcome feelings of shame and anger that come from living and growing up in a harmfully cruel, homophobic world.

Reading this book was almost a surreal experience, it so closely described moments from my life. I'd say, if the title of the book even sounds remotely, minutely relevant to your or a loved one's life experiences of a "difficult" relationship with a parent, just give it a look. The first half of the book lays out the problems and the common features of these parent-child relationships and the damage it does to children - damage that will follow them until they confront it. The 2nd half gives concrete examples of how to begin to heal from that damage and even how to maintain the relationships in a more sustainable way. Excellent book.

I’m sad to say I did believe what happened to Lacey. So much of it has also happened to me. It was a painful experience at times to hear her recount painful stories that were shockingly similar to things that I’ve experienced, even as a millennial. I can’t imagine the orders of magnitude more intense the experiences were like for my parents generation.

So why did I laugh my ass off the entire book!? Because these are amazing stories told by hysterically funny storytellers. This book is a gem. You owe it to yourself to read it. It’s a spoonful of sugar to go along with some terrible medicine.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book would be more appreciated by those who did not feel so disappointed in and disrespected by the Bush Administration.

What was most disappointing about George W. Bush’s story?

His lack of serious introspection and his failure to address the core failures of his presidency was supremely disappointing. This book is a missed opportunity. He only cops to minor sort of surface failures - his chapter on Katrina is incredibly obtuse. He claims the principle failures were the failure to deploy troops just a little faster and some minor public relations missteps. I don't know why I was expecting, from this man, a deeper self-analysis of a defining moment of his presidency than this, but I really was.

Another problem of the book is the score-settling he includes, often in glib little asides and often somewhat hypocritically. For example, he criticizes the campaign strategies of Al Gore and John Kerry, but has nothing but praise for Karl Rove and Lee Atwater. Seriously, that's hysterical. He should do stand-up.

A real missed opportunity for a surprisingly thoughtful-seeming man to reckon with his presidency's complex legacy.

What does Ron McLarty bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

McLarty is a great narrator. George W. Bush has a distinct way of speaking and there are many types of narrators who would have been either too formal in their speech or would have gone overboard into caricature. McLarty strikes a great balance - a vaguely Texan accent but not an imitation. You could almost close your eyes and imagine G.W.B. was doing the talking himself.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It's certainly compelling and engaging. It's hard to put down once you've started listening, because he's really addressing some very important moments in our recent history. And he comes across as surprisingly endearing for large portions of the book.

I found the text of the book very hard to maintain interest in but this audiobook production was excellently performed and executed. The actress who reads was delightful and enthusiastic. High quality!
