Historia
Though Darcy struggles privately with his desire for Elizabeth Bennet, he must still fulfill his roles as landlord, master, brother, and friend. In Book Two, the "silent time" of Austen's novel, Fitzwilliam Darcy and his personal world emerge as he deals with his servants, including a valet with aspirations of sartorial triumph.

This was a slog to get through
Revisado: 10-16-24
Not much about Elizabeth or the Bennets, Mostly about Darcy discovering he has libido, and what to do about it. And gentlemen things. Cats, smoking, drinking, riding, weapons. I would not recommend it. The narration was fine. I do like Fletcher his valet.

Historia
Summer 1924. On the eve of a glittering Society party, by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses, sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again. Winter 1999. Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet’s suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace’s mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge – something history has forgotten but Grace never could.

A slog to get through
Revisado: 10-26-23
A Downton Abbey-esque novel with little action or suspense, a supremely slow pace, and a sedating performance. I found myself uncaring for most of the downstairs staff; and the upper class elites were prejudiced, self absorbed, self entitled, and uninteresting.
The speed of the reading is a cure for insomnia.
I would have loved to hear how Grace achieved a doctoral degree. This was mostly ignored.
I’m glad I was exposed to other Kate Morton books before this one. This, her first, would have put me off any others.

Abridged Version!
Revisado: 07-21-23
Performance reading by Kevin Whately was ok, even trying to mimic some of Morse’s gruff tone. Other characters seemingly getting lost in the reading. But I didn’t notice the abridged version until I purchased it. So, that’s a major disappointment for me.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Pretty good documentary
Revisado: 07-20-21
An interesting true tale that comes across like a mix of Dateline and Radiolab. It’s quick, just a couple hours long. Intriguingly caught my attention immediately. Crime drama mixed with native Alaskan mythology/stories (no offense meant to Native Alaskans).

Historia
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

How we contribute to our own tragedy
Revisado: 10-03-16
The title sounded interesting. I could tell immediately this was to be a sad book. The story of a couple who keep and raise a found baby without reporting it - well the reader knows this cannot have a happy ending. Wither them, the baby, the real parents, friends family or all of them will be adversely affected is eminent. Still it's a decent story to remind us "what would I do?" in situations like that. The Audible performance was just ok. The male reader with Australian accent had such a forlorn tone to the reading again it set a tragic tone. Frequently his voice would soften so much I could not discern the words. This required me to rewind the recording. I'd recommend
this book if you need to read something anguish filled and don't want to revisit Shakespearean tragedies.
