Historia
Tim and Abi have always been different from their peers. Precociously bright, they spend their evenings in their parents' attic discussing the macabre and unexplained, zealously re-reading books on folklore, hauntings and the supernatural. In particular, they are obsessed with photographs of ghostly apparitions and the mix of terror and delight they provoke in their otherwise boring and safe childhoods. But when Tim and Abi decide to fake a photo of a ghost to frighten an unpopular school friend, they set in motion a deadly and terrifying chain of events.

What happened?
Revisado: 04-06-24
The story had such a great start, in fact, I found the whole story really compelling until…suddenly it was over and I had no idea what happened. Nothing seemed to have anything to do with anything else and I have no idea what the point was. I’m disappointed because I really was enjoying it until I realized i was almost finished and nothing had happened, no wrapping up of any plot points. It hurts me to give a negative review, but don’t waste your time. Well written, great atmosphere but in the end… nothing.

Silly and implausible ending
Revisado: 09-17-21
Completely agree with many reviewers, this started so strong and really grabbed me, but as the story progressed and the solution was revealed I was completely disgusted. The author has got to be kidding! Yes, people keep secrets from those we love the most, and yes we all have hidden sides to us but this was just nonsense and utterly unbelievable. Can’t recommend, unfortunately.

Historia
When Jax receives nine missed calls from her older sister, Lexie, she assumes that it’s just another one of her sister’s episodes. Manic and increasingly out of touch with reality, Lexie has pushed Jax away for over a year. But the next day, Lexie is dead: drowned in the pool at their grandmother’s estate. When Jax arrives at the house to go through her sister’s things, she learns that Lexie was researching the history of their family and the property. And as she dives in deeper herself, she discovers that the land holds a far darker past than she could have ever imagined.

No story!
Revisado: 05-11-21
I kept waiting for the story to kick in, and when I realized about 2/3 of the way in that this was all there was, and could t wait for it to be over. I love Jennifer McMahon’s books, so it pains me to write this. But it was just so boring, with a tiny bit of a twist ending. The Winter People it wasn’t!

Historia
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

Wait, what?
Revisado: 09-29-20
I kept waiting for something mysterious to happen! I love Ruth Ware’s books generally, but this was just boring. I knew who the killer was very early on, I was so hoping it wasn’t that person, since it was so obvious, I hoped it was a clever deflection. It’s certainly well written, and I enjoy the voice performer very much , but overall I thought this was a dud.

Historia
The daughter of a US Senator is monitoring her social media presence when she finds a picture of herself on a strange blog. And there are other pictures...of the children of other influential Washington politicians, walking or standing outside their schools, each identified by name. Surrounding the photos are texts of vicious political rants from a motley variety of radical groups. It's obviously alarming - is there an unstable extremist tracking the loved ones of powerful politicians with deadly intent? But when the FBI is called in, there isn't much the feds can do.

Virtually No Story or Suspense!
Revisado: 05-10-20
I’ve been reading the Prey series since they first came out in the late 80s. I’ve loved the stories of Lucas and his friends and changing, growing family and I’ve been enthralled by the stories and the suspense. This one is frankly terrible. Barely a story, no suspense, no Weather and the kids, just an utter dud. I hope this is an anomaly and it’s not that John Sandford is going to be phoning it in going forward. Completely disappointed.

Historia
Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside - the woman who was killed. She's been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It's a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she'd broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she'd stopped.

Ugh, where do authors get these weak, spineless women from? And the “twist” that brings the plot to light is laughable and lazy. Just not a good book.

Historia
Cora Bender killed a man. But why? What could have caused this quiet, lovable young mother to stab a stranger in the throat, again and again, until she was pulled off his body? For the local police it was an open-and-shut case. Cora confessed; there was no shortage of proof or witnesses. But Police Commissioner Rudolf Grovian refused to close the file and began his own maverick investigation.

Excruciating
Revisado: 08-18-17
This is the first book I've ever returned in 9 years. The book was 99% excruciating build up for 1% reveal at the end. Virtually no plot to speak of, the entire book seems to take place during police interviews at a mental hospital. I just didn't care what happened to Cora at all, and given what we eventually learn about her thats saying something. I was furious and just wanted to get to the point by the time I reached the end, not an emotion you want to invoke in your readers. Skip it.

Historia
On paper, Chris Brennan looks perfect. He's applying for a job as a high school government teacher, he's ready to step in as an assistant baseball coach, and his references are impeccable. But everything about Chris Brennan is a lie. Susan Sematov is proud of her son Raz, a high school pitcher so athletically talented that he's being recruited for a full-ride scholarship to a Division I college, with a future in major-league baseball. But Raz’s father died only a few months ago, leaving her son in a vulnerable place where any new father figure might influence him for good, or evil.

Just...nothing
Revisado: 06-14-17
This book commits all the cardinal sins - undeveloped characters you don't care about, virtually no plot, no mystery to speak of, it was just a complete waste of a credit. Another author I used to love that just churns out books no one wants to read anymore. A shame.

Historia
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

I loved the Girl on the Train. I could barely listen to this book, there was no story at all, that I could ascertain. I am an avid reader, I finish every book I start, but I could just not get to the end of this one - I just didn't care what happened. Really disappointed!

Not up to John Sandford's usual standards
Revisado: 05-11-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend so many of the "Prey" series books to a friend, but not this one. There was almost no mystery and no tension, just a some shootout and a chasing. I could not believe how boring this was, when I had been looking so forward to new Prey book for months. It was shocking in its inanity, especially given how outstanding his last book, Field of Prey was.
Would you ever listen to anything by John Sandford again?
I will, because one dud doesn't negate his incredible body of work.
