Historia
In Empire of Liberty, one of America's most esteemed historians, Gordon S. Wood, offers a brilliant account of the early American Republic, ranging from 1789 and the beginning of the national government to the end of the War of 1812. As Wood reveals, the period was marked by tumultuous change in all aspects of American life - in politics, society, economy, and culture.

Historia
In 1940, against the explosive backdrop of the Nazi onslaught in Europe, two farsighted candidates for the U.S. presidency - Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, running for an unprecedented third term, and talented Republican businessman Wendell Willkie-found themselves on the defensive against American isolationists and their charismatic spokesman Charles Lindbergh, who called for surrender to Hitler's demands.

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

War and Peace
Revisado: 07-01-22
A well scripted tale of the endgame of the war in the Pacific and the transition to leave both in Japan and the US. Excellent narration of the political, economic and interesting decisions that brought the battles to an end and finally sent the boys home.
The most interesting part was the in-depth discussion of the internal Japanese arguments to seek peace of fight to the last man. Excellent use of combatant sources have it very human feel.
A superlative trilogy!

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Escape from the South
Revisado: 04-18-22
In amazingly dispassionate but evocative prose Ernest Shackleton describes his effort to cross the South Pole, the loss of his ship Endurance and incredible two-year 1500-mile journey across the ice and polar seas to reach safety. It is by far the most stirring fear of courage and leadership. The only inhuman losses of the 28 men were some tied to frostbite. But the tale also includes the adventures of the other half of the expedition which laid supply depots in the far side of the ice cap for Shackleton to complete is arduous trek. Here too only three men died from the motivations of glaciers and blizzards of incredible force with minimal food and protection.
A thrilling, stirring and icing narrative of the human spirit to carry on against truly hopeless odds -- and survive!

Historia
In chronicling the adventurous life of legendary CIA operative Edward Lansdale, The Road Not Taken definitively reframes our understanding of the Vietnam War. In this epic biography of Edward Lansdale (1908-1987) best-selling historian Max Boot demonstrates how Lansdale pioneered a "hearts and mind" diplomacy, first in the Philippines, then in Vietnam. It was a visionary policy that, as Boot reveals, was ultimately crushed by America's giant military bureaucracy.

Hearts and Minds
Revisado: 04-12-22
Interesting focus on how US failed to deal with leaders and people of Vietnam by trying to bomb Vietcong back to drone and massacred tens of thousands of unseen combatants thereby losing all chance of keeping their support and respect. The Lansdale counterinsurgency approach was disregarded by military authorities.
Text is somewhat redundant with a lot of back and forth on events. The early boo gets the book off to a slow start.

Historia
As the Allies raced to defeat Hitler, four men, all in the same unit, earned medal after medal for battlefield heroism. Maurice “Footsie” Britt, a former professional football player, became the very first American to receive every award for valor in a single war. Michael Daly was a West Point dropout who risked his neck over and over to keep his men alive. Keith Ware would one day become the first and only draftee in history to attain the rank of general before serving in Vietnam. In WWII, Ware owed his life to the finest soldier he ever commanded, a baby-faced Texan named Audie Murphy.

Historia
As Mark Mazower shows us in his enthralling and definitive new account, myths about the Greek War of Independence outpaced the facts from the very beginning, and for good reason. This was an unlikely cause, against long odds, a disorganized collection of Greek patriots up against what was still one of the most storied empires in the world, the Ottomans. The revolutionaries needed all the help they could get.

A Forgotten Revolution
Revisado: 03-15-22
Everyone knows of c!radical Greece but the story of the making of modern Greece through revolution against its Ottoman oppressors is even further distant to today's reader's. This book goes a long way to raising the veil of the struggle that made the Greece we know now and tied it to the revolutions that evolved into modern Europe's rise of democracies and fall of empires.

Building a hermit kingdom of paranoia
Revisado: 02-15-22
Reading this in the shadow of current Russia-Ukraine threats is an amazing narrative of a nation-- political sect and cult of personality -- that was unable to trust any of its own people including its own defenders. The sheer volume of prisoners in and the national administration of such a huge penal system is staggering. The Spanish Inquisition pales in comparison.
The voices were a little irritating even as they.made it clear the various origins of the actions
