Historia
In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-19-22
I really hated this. Felt like Twin Peaks by way of Mayberry RFD. The small.town characters were aggressively folksy. A different narrator may have helped a little. This one just didn’t seem like a good fit.

Standard fare. Great narration.
Revisado: 01-23-22
Didn’t find anything out of the ordinary in terms of plot but Barrie Kreink’s rendition of the delightful character of Fern made this an enjoyable listen.

Historia
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. Which means someone is always lying. When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

Is it the book or the narrator?
Revisado: 01-17-22
Sometimes it’s hard for me to decide if I’ve really enjoyed a novel, or is Stephanie Racine just that good? She never disappoints. I’m less familiar with Armitage as a narrator but liked his performance very much as well. I’d say this was a decent but standard thriller, but you can’t go wrong with the performances.

Historia
Winter winds off the Atlantic have turned the tourist mecca of Seaside Creek, New Jersey, into a ghost town. Dr. Christina Paxton, however, is growing accustomed to living with ghosts. Recently widowed, the emergency room physician has returned to the shore with her young daughter, house-sitting a sprawling beachside Victorian home. One night, her two-year-old calls her by a name that makes Christina's blood run cold and sends her thoughts spiraling back 30 years.

Too bad about the love story
Revisado: 09-18-21
This story has some truly creepy elements that I liked. I think the love interest detracts but I usually think that. Hillary Huber is one of my favorites. She can make me believe I like a book about which I’m on the fence because her performance is that good.

Historia
Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers…each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

My favorite Ware
Revisado: 02-22-21
This is the third Ruth Ware novel to which I’ve listened. I’ve liked the other two but I always had the suspicion that Imogen Church’s narration was what I really loved about those stories—I’m a big fan of hers. She’s excellent here again but I liked this novel itself too. The protagonist (Erin) is sympathetic and likable. I liked the sweet relationship between Erin and coworker Danny. The snowed-in ski chalet setting is creepy and claustrophobic—felt like an appropriate pandemic listen.

Narrator nearly ruined it
Revisado: 06-19-19
Second book by Gillian White I’ve read (and loved). I can’t imagine why this narrator was chosen. Seemed all wrong to me; seemed not to even have any familiarity with the text. Still 5 stars overall because I did love it.

“Anyways”!
Revisado: 04-14-19
The story was dark but mostly well-written and plotted. The wrap-up in the epilogue was a little too pat.
Definitely could have used some copy editing. While it’s non-standard English that’s accepted conversationally in dialogue, the word “anyways” must have been used at least once per chapter, and by each character multiple times. Most of these characters were portrayed as well-educated so the word didn’t make sense. It’s a pet peeve of mine that I hear more and more frequently—not limited to this book.
Narration was spotty. Some good but some very stilted with mispronunciations of even quite common words. It makes me think no one listened to it all the way through before release.

Bad romance
Revisado: 09-08-18
I must not have read the book’s
description carefully because had I known this was a romance I wouldn’t have selected it. Couldn’t get interested in the characters or the plot and there were some unforgivable grammatical and word usage errors: “throwing my car in reverse and curtailing out of my spot, diva style...”

Had a tough time with the narrator
Revisado: 02-24-18
This criticism doesn’t seem fair because while I think the narrator read/performed well, her pronunciation drove me batty. Not that she pronounced words necessarily incorrectly but throughout she pronounced her short ‘’e’ vowel sounds closer to ‘a’s. This feels petty but I had a hard time listening for that reason.

Some proofreading & editing required
Revisado: 12-02-17
The story was entertaining. I have trouble with an author who appears to consider basic proofreading/editing optional. For example, the word ‘palatable’ was used. But contextually, ‘palpable’ was the intended word. I though (hoped) that it was a mistake made by the narrator but I’ve found the same complaint about the print version.
