Historia
In the dark winter of 1917, as World War I was deadlocked, Britain knew that Europe could be saved only if the United States joined the war. But President Wilson remained unshakable in his neutrality. Then, with a single stroke, the tool to propel America into the war came into a quiet British office. One of countless messages intercepted by the crack team of British decoders, the Zimmermann telegram was a top-secret message from Berlin inviting Mexico to join Japan in an invasion of the United States.

Weirder than fiction
Revisado: 09-12-22
President Wilson was a more stubborn appeaser of Germany than Chamberlain 20 years later, as this page-turner of a historical narrative shows. ‘Peace without Victory’ was Wilson’s proposed solution to a war started by an authoritarian expansionist military power against a democratic alliance. Fascinating book.

Vance’s tour de force
Revisado: 07-24-22
The Demon Princes may be Vance’s most impressive series, set in different locales, but his creation of the planet Tschai (his name for the work, better than the prosaic Planet of Adventure’ is an astonishing feat of imagination, and description of both aliens and an alien world. Adam Reith is a more sympathetic hero than Kirth Gerson - a highly trained and courageous ethical everyman. Some dated sexism.

Best of the Demon Princes books
Revisado: 06-15-22
The Killing Machine crams more invention and plot twists than the other books, and has wonderfully witty Vancian excerpts from books and articles to introduce chapters. The Oikumene is an astonishing imaginative coup, so detailed, varied, and compelling that the reader wholly accepts it.
