Historia
Dominic's world had been a fairly simple life. To live his life to the best of his abilities, gain experience, level up, and strive to enjoy himself as best as he could in a backwater. Which, while tough on its own, was made infinitely harder by his father being the local executioner. All of that becomes infinitely worse when his entire family is murdered. Now, he's the Prince-in-Hiding for a nearly non-existent royal family.

Problem w/ Narrator
Revisado: 03-08-25
I am certain the narrator is a good guy, but he should not be narrating audible books. His interpretation was flat and seemed separate and apart from the dynamics of the characters.

Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Horrible
Revisado: 09-30-20
I am a fan of sci fi and typically give authors a lot of rope if they have an involving plot, but this is one of the worst written books I have ever read. I am sorry I wasted my time. Cliche after cliche without a scintilla of character insight or basic editing. Give it a miss.

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

The Title Says It All
Revisado: 04-15-19
This was an uneven and largely superficial look at what otherwise would be an interesting concept. The idea of an alien takeover that is programmed into our DNA is pretty cool, but not in this author's hands. The book was not helped by one of the worst narrations I have ever heard. John Waters didn't bother to distinguish characters or genders with different accents, inflections or pitch. Impossible to tell who was speaking based on the voice. Pretty good bet he recorded this in one sitting.

The year is AD 2790. With space elevators and giant orbital fleets hovering over Earth, open war looks inevitable, and people are anxious to get away. The lines are drawn, with the Confederacy in the East and the First World Alliance in the West. This is not military sci-fi
Revisado: 06-24-16
What would have made Excelsior better?
Where do I start? On the plus side, the plot is interesting. On the negative, the author has no feel for the military whatsoever, and this book is mainly about domestic violence, not military sci-fi. Truly absurd dialogue between the primary character, a captain of a starship, and his crew. During the entire book, I spotted only two instances of his orders not being questioned. And the narration was one of the worst I have ever listened to, and I'm a voracious audio book listener. James Cronin's go to "other" voice is completely deadpan without any relevant inflection or feeling. I am truly sorry I wasted my money on this.
Would you recommend Excelsior to your friends? Why or why not?
I would tell them to run in the other direction, unless they are fans of domestic violence themed literature.
Would you be willing to try another one of James Patrick Cronin’s performances?
Not in a million years. James Cronin should stick to narrating non-fiction. He has no feel for characters and it is dumbfounding that he was chosen for this book. On the other hand, when you consider that the publisher also chose a military sci-fi cover shot, you get a sense for how lazy this whole production really is.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Excelsior?
No amount of editing could make this book readable.
Any additional comments?
I hate being negative about audiobooks. They are hard to write and challenging to produce on a budget. I have the utmost respect for the authors, narrators and publishers who transport me to other times and other worlds when I press the play button. But this book is a rip-off and an insult for people who spend their hard earned money on this type of entertainment.

Historia
The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malazan Fourteenth Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion, Dassem Ultor, was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves.

Nice writing, poor editing
Revisado: 09-16-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was difficult to get through this one. Some might say this is a rich tapestry of characters and points of view, but compared to other sf/fantasy series, it feels like over-indulgence. There are many sections that are gripping, no doubt about it. The problem is that you have to wade through a tedious amount of character development and exposition. It is like you are taking a psychic dream flight through a world and get stuck from time to time in characters and perspectives that you must follow until you are ejected and can get back to the main plot line.
Would you ever listen to anything by Steven Erikson again?
Sure, if Steven gets a new editor for his next series. He's a terrific writer.

Fun and Engaging Modern Fantasy
Revisado: 11-22-11
Great read by Luke Daniels and another great installement by Kevin Hearne for his Iron Druid Chronicles. In the midst of mythical gods come to life, druidry, sorcery, vampires, wearwolves and a decidedly green twist, Hearne's first person narrative via his main character Atticus the Druid keeps things warmhearted and humorous. Like all good stories, it is easy to identify with Hearne's characters and care about their fate. I just wish Hearne would write longer books!
