Historia
Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra’s impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960s. We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a 13-year-old houseboy working for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who's abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene.

Among the best audio books I've heard
Revisado: 01-17-25
I have 175 audiobooks in my library, I would definitely rate it in my top 5. Adichie's novel is a fearless, unsentimental account of a traumatic historical event that also encompasses with great empathy and imagination the personal trials of people who lived through it. Zainab Jah's performance is breathtaking I've never heard a reafer more passionate and virtuosic. I am dismayed that this is her only full-length audiobook.

Walking through London/Two Millennia

Excellent
Revisado: 11-21-24
This lecture series is excellent -- entertaining but not dumbed down. It is so skillfully structured that I found myself compelled to listen to the next chapter and the next as though it was a thriller. Bucholz seems like the kind of professor anyone would love to have -- dynamic, engaging, enthusiastic about and sympathetic toward his subject.

Historia
There is a Bronze Age trackway below the Isle of Dogs, Anglo-Saxon graves rest under St. Pauls, and the monastery of Whitefriars lies beneath Fleet Street. To go under London is to penetrate history, and Ackroyd's book is filled with the stories unique to this underworld: the hydraulic device used to lower bodies into the catacombs in Kensal Green cemetery; the door in the plinth of the statue of Boadicea on Westminster Bridge that leads to a huge tunnel packed with cables for gas, water, and telephone; the sulphurous fumes on the Underground's Metropolitan Line.

Overwrought twaddle
Revisado: 11-18-24
Ackroyd relentlessly drags myth and metaphor and other such twaddle about the underworld into what is otherwise a pretty informative narrative. It finally just got insufferable and I bailed on the book with about an hour left. Narrator was adequate, though.

Historia
Berlin Alexanderplatz, the great novel of Berlin and the doomed Weimar Republic, is one of the great books of the 20th century, gruesome, farcical, and appalling, word drunk, pitchdark. In Michael Hofmann's extraordinary new translation, Alfred Döblin's masterpiece lives in English for the first time.

Irritating narrator
Revisado: 07-21-24
The translation is written in mid-20th c. London
working class slang. The narrator reads in a relentlessly jocular Cockney (I guess) accent that gets really grating, like a bad imitation of a Monty Python sketch that doesn't end. Dialog is hard to follow as he uses the same tone, pitch and pace for every character. I hate to throw away a credit, but I had to bail about 1/3 in. I'll try and pick up the book some day.

Outstanding Narration
Revisado: 06-19-24
The story was entertaining and lively, though not really my thing. Kobna Holdsbrook-Smith's narration, however, was mind-blowing. He created an extremely sympathetic portrayal of the story's narrator, but also made the ancillary characters, male and female, incredibly vivid. I don't think I've ever heard a narrator voice both sexes so well.

An entertaining comedy of Edwardian manners. Davina Porter's performance rivals those of the great Juliet Stevenson.

Historia
Keri Blakinger always lived life at full throttle. Growing up, that meant throwing herself into competitive figure skating with an all-consuming passion that led her to nationals. But when her skating career suddenly fell apart, that meant diving into self-destruction with the intensity she once saved for the ice. For the next nine years, Keri ricocheted from one dark place to the next: living on the streets, selling drugs and sex, and shooting up between classes all while trying to hold herself together enough to finish her degree at Cornell.

Revisado: 11-18-23
This is a deeply personal, empathetic, courageous work. It was all the more moving to hear the author herself read it. This book is incredibly important, but also inspiring and entertaining. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
