DCC was an instant hit with me. The Bedlam Bride left me feeling I was listening to an author reach a new level and compose their opus.

This series, as af whole, has been engaging and wonderful. At times I felt it was a bit dry, but the histories we're nice to know. Lots of interesting characters with their own story arcs.

This particular book was truly wonderful. I got watery eyes multiple times. Laughed out loud (earning odd looks in the grocery store), and sat listening to the last few hours filled with anxiety and horror and excitement.

I enjoyed the story and its conclusion was pretty good.

The cast of characters had a lot to keep up with, but most were treated well and given enough spotlight to grow over the course of the story to keep me engaged.

Some of the science did take me out of the immersion tho. The very high intelligence of the dolphins was unreasonable and the convergent evolution of nearly undistinguishable humans was utter nonsense.

I had to grapple with the perspective and use of gender pronouns quite a bit for book one. Having successfully negotiated that challenge, book two came easily and I found I had a deeper appreciation for each character.

The events of book two added much more depth to an already rich universe. The actions and resulted effects of Fleet Captain came off as intelligent and interesting without any Deus ex machina or other cheesy literary mechanisms.

Very little character development beyond the strangely obsessed drives to research ball lightening. Science performed like it were a backyard project and not a top secret government research facility. The main character contributed nothing to the whole research project, just was pushed along and followed the main engineer and scientist like a puppy.

This story was a full series of Deus Ex Machina. Here is the template, repeated a dozen times per chapter:

1. Recite some obscure culture fact
2. Explain how this presents an impossible obstacle
3. Reveal character's deep knowledge and item in inventory that eliminates the obstacle
4. Sound releaved and amazed

Recent volumes in this series had been a bit lack luster, but I am a fan and enjoyed them all. Brushfire managed to set the stage for a whole new mode of warfare, real progress in character relationships, and refreshed Skippy jokes - without repeatedly talking about dumb monkeys.. (At least not so many times that it wore on me.)

By the end of the book I found myself thrilled and excited with anticipation. You should read this book.
