Historia
Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) is one of the most beloved of the Catholic saints. In 1562, during the era of the Spanish Inquisition, Teresa sat down to write an account of the mystical experiences for which she had become famous. The result was this book, one of the great classics of spiritual autobiography. With this fresh translation of The Book of My Life, Mirabai Starr brings the inimitable Spanish mystic to life for a new generation, with contemporary English that mirrors Teresa's own earthy, vernacular Spanish, and that presents us with someone we feel we know.

Basically an abriged version of the original
Revisado: 03-06-20
Seriously the translation is awful. It's quite obvious that the translator is making a concerted effort to sanitize Teresa of Avila's more challenging facets. Most egregiously, the translator often chooses the translate the word "pecado" which means "sin" into the phrase "missing the mark" which certainly sounds less scary than "sin."
This isn't the only problem, she also chooses in many instances to straight up drop Teresa of Avila's remarks of self-deprecation, which in the original text illustrate her penitent spirit and dependence on grace. Along the same lines, the translator will at times editorialize and cut back on the original version's praises for Christ, whom Teresa spoke to as a husband and addressed with deep devotion.
I am lucky that I speak and read Spanish and can easily go to the original Spanish. I tried this version because I wanted an audiobook I could listen in the car and figured an English version would be better produced than a Spanish version, but the above mentioned problems were so frequent and egregious I just resolved to reading the book in its original spanish instead of listening to this terrible translation.
Avoid if you want to get to know the real Teresa of Avila. It's fine if you want to get a general idea of who she was but be aware this is a kind of hippie, sanitized version of the true text.

It's fine I guess
Revisado: 07-26-19
To me most of these observations are obvious. I can see how some individuals might find it useful, but it's not that fun of a read and the case studies are not boring but also not fantastically fascinating.

A good story poorly told.

There is great drama in an interesting historical context happening here. The stort itself suffers due to a beautiful yet contrived style wjich sacrifices clarity for the sake of elegance.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Excellent Magical Realism
Revisado: 03-21-17
This book manages to be many things: an adventure story, a war time historic drama, a suspenseful noir mystery, and a rumination on internal conflict and existentialism. Seemingly disparate, it ties all loose threads together in a masterfully constructed work of literature.

Historia
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.

What an awful piece of middle school trash
Revisado: 01-10-17
A masturbatory, conflict-less, plotless excuse for a novel with paper-thin characters that reads like Firefly fanfiction.
