Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Interesting but wordy
Revisado: 05-18-20
Was a very interesting story and extremely detailed - which unfortunately led it to be very wordy and slow. I found myself getting lost in all the details and it dragged on and on.
I can understand why some reviewers didn’t like the narrator (since she’s British and Virginia was American), but Juliet Stevenson always does a superb job with narration. She is my all time favorite.
Overall, I’m glad that I listened (I had originally begun trying to read the book but found I couldn’t maintain interest and opted to listen instead).

I will listen to anything that Juliet Stevenson narrates. She is simply the best. The story is good too, enjoyable and captivating.

Historia
When a crisis of faith prompts his departure from the Church of England, Margaret Hale’s father moves his family north to bleak, industrial Milton. At first, Margaret is put off by the town’s grit and poverty - a stark contrast to her rural southern hometown. But when she is awakened to the suffering of Milton’s hardworking citizens, she makes it her mission to improve their lives. However, Margaret soon finds herself at odds with the man she is falling in love with - the handsome, bullheaded industrialist John Thornton.

Wonderful story, terrible narrator
Revisado: 04-29-20
I received this book as the free Audible Narration that came with the kindle edition, but I couldn’t finish this book because of the narrator. I found myself hating the story and not wanting to listen to it. I finally realized it was the narrator who made me dislike all the characters and who didn’t add any depth or emotion to the story. I ended up returning it and purchasing the edition narrated by Juliet Stevenson. So much better!

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Knockout performance!
Revisado: 04-29-20
I tried listening to this audiobook by another narrator and I could NOT get into the story. Finally figured out it was the narrator, not the story, that bothered me so much. I had previously listened to Juliet Stevenson in her narration of Middlemarch, so when I found out that she had done North and South as well I was so excited! I immediately bought this copy and am SO GLAD I did!! Her performance it’s truly incredible. So much heart and emotion. I actually enjoyed the book! So glad I didn’t stick with the other edition; I would have missed out on such a great book!
