I just like listening to Ina
Revisado: 11-01-24
She just comforts and makes me at ease. She leans into the good parts, like a highlight reel and I wish I’d seen more of the low points, but it’s her story to tell!

Nice world-building; not much plot
Revisado: 06-07-24
Big fan of police procedurals and Tana French. This one didn’t really do it for me though. Just couldn’t get invested in the “who done it.” The characters felt like characters and not real people so I found I didn’t really care about any of them.
A miss for me.

Adjoa Andoh and Ann Leckie are Perfection
Revisado: 04-19-24
As a fan of the Leckie/Andoh audio combo, this collection doesn’t disappoint. Definitely a treat for a fan of Leckie, though I don’t know if it would be *as* good for someone who’s not familiar with her other work; this book enriches the worlds she’s created already while also giving us some charming one-offs. Hope there’s something in the works for 2025!

They’re getting weaker
Revisado: 10-19-23
I found this to me my least favorite Kate Wise story so far. It just didn’t seem to make sense, the stakes felt low, her partner was pushed way into the background. And everything felt really fast. Often a book needs to be cut shorter; this one needed to be fleshed out.
I may not continue with the series after this one :(

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

One of the best narrators ever. Before I’ll search for another book by this author (and I enjoyed the story), I’m going to search for books read by this narrator. So good!

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Twist doesn’t save boring story
Revisado: 07-03-20
This was thoroughly uncompelling; there was no building up of suspense, only a twist that was meh at best. No one is likable, and a lack of explicit resolution was the final bad taste in my mouth.
With other books I don’t like, I can at least understand why other people liked it/rated it well. With this one, I’m baffled.

For lovers of witches, romance, historical fiction
Revisado: 04-19-20
While it did suck me in early with the mythology and period/setting, the plot is a bit repetitive (with each woman facing the same problem and same solution). The last section was a bit too fantastical and the ending left me unsatisfied. It’s a book that passed the time for me, but didn’t inspire me to get more by this author or recommend it to a friend.
