Probably best read as a book and not listened to
Revisado: 01-10-23
The story itself is relatively compact and enjoyable. Pacing is decent as well. Problem for me (and it's only an opinion) is that this narrator wasn't the right choice. I think our female lead could have been better portrayed by someone else. I think the meanest accusation I can throw at the narrator is that he could have put more emotion and life into the performance of the characters. It WAS NOT BAD, just a little muted and could have used a bigger dynamic and emotional range.
I would say this is a good choice for teens through adults. It's unoffensive and doesn't have any provocative scenes or sexualization that you might find in other novels. It doesn't pander by having a strong female character "just because". You follow her journey as she grows, makes mistakes, and learns from them.

Historia
The Roman Republic’s development from a city state into a world power that controlled large swathes of modern Italy, Gaul, and Spain, as well as other parts of Europe is seen by many as being the direct result of Roman fear of the “Celtic Threat.” The sacking of Rome by the Gauls in 386 BC became indelibly imprinted into the Roman psyche, and with this fear came a desire to put as much distance as possible between the city of Rome and any potential enemy.

A very brief whirlwind look at Gaul
Revisado: 06-29-22
I think the harshest two things I can say about this audio book is that it has no narrative and the narrator is not very fluid.
The text comes across like a university student in the first semester of a masters school program wrote a paper summarizing several centuries of history. It's not BAD, it just lacks the context of narrative. As a result we are presented with less of a book and more of a list of facts without citation. I have no reason to believe that the author is making anything up, it would just be helpful to have a more nuanced dialog to work with.
The narrator isn't bad either, but he doesn't go out of his way to provide any vocal variety. Most of the time it sounds like he is cold reading only a few sentences at a time and in the exact same cadence and tone each time. He isn't dead monotone like the actor Ben Stein, but his lack of change in vocal dynamics, cadence, rhythm, or narrative shape makes it seem like you're listening to amazon Alexa imitate actor/narrator Stephen Fry.
Now, those things sound awful, but they shouldn't deter you from giving this a listen. Despite the lack of detail, it does act as a very direct and straightforward introduction to the history of the Gallic people. If you listen and make note of sections that interest you, you can Google those moments in the or the people mentioned and find out more.

It's... Alright
Revisado: 06-29-22
This story reads a bit like fan fiction. Like a smaller idea that would make a solid and compact chapter of a larger book has been extracted from its source material and then stretched and given some filler. I hate saying it, but our main character could be completely written out and it wouldn't change the story. Same with Jaina. The story is about the dragon aspects, so why not just write a story about that? Why include Kalec and Jaina when they don't serve any purpose other than name recognition?
It's not a bad story, it just feels like blizzard and the author didn't bring their A-game.

Informative, but sometimes odd
Revisado: 11-10-20
His close to each lecture is odd and the music at the start/finish is like it's from some conspiracy theory TV show. However, the information is pretty decent. Some of his interpretations of how Roman culture works are off from major, accepted interpretations, but everyone differs.

I enjoy this book. It's a good introduction to astrophysics. Not too technical but not super simple. This book is for adults who want to learn more about the cosmos, but on a "101" level.

Not his strongest work
Revisado: 12-21-17
It got a bit predictable. Action was lacking and not much suspense. Overall, it lacked the sense of curiosity and depth of the previous books. This was less about the journey of learning and the thrill of discovery, but more about expositing on the nature of atheism and faith.

it's a pretty good story, unfortunately the narrator has a limited capacity to do voices. From time it becomes difficult to figure out who she is speaking as. Otherwise she's good.

"You are either good or bad, and both are dangerous". It would have been an easy job for the Circus: A can of film couriered from Helsinki to London. In the past the Circus handled all things political, while the Department dealt with matters military. But the Department has been moribund since the War, its resources siphoned away. Now, one of their agents is dead, and vital evidence verifying the presence of Soviet missiles near the West German border is gone. John Avery is the Department's younger member and its last hope.

Very little George Smiley compared to the others
Revisado: 03-07-15
A vert dry story, characters were not terribly memorable either. This isn't a story ABOUT George, just one he happens to be in and only in the very periphery of.
