So much that’s charming but an undercurrent of cruelty

I enjoyed much about the first third of this book, but I really truly hated the male lead’s cruelty that he packaged as dominance. I hated seeing him bully the kiddo into feeling shame for his gentle side, how he trained him to hurt and humiliate his mom. Left a really bad taste in my mouth. The sex scenes became unsexy because he wouldn’t listen when she said no to things or expressed discomfort. Power play is fun when it’s consensual but he doesn’t listen to her boundaries, and so much of what happens seems like barely disguised misogyny. She’s actually afraid of him. Too much bullying, too much force, too much inequity in the power balance in the relationship. It bummed me out in the end.

So many mispronounciations

I enjoyed this story greatly. But the narrator mispronounced so many words it drove me crazy. Including “Titania”, which appears roughly four hundred times in this novel. So annoying!

Hero is a bully

The power dynamics in this really bothered me. The heroine is spoiled, yes. But the hero starves and humiliates her and she is literally his captive. He’s arrogant and dictatorial. Felt more like Stockholm syndrome than romance.

Ali Hazelwood is always enjoyable, but this isn’t my favorite

The heroine is very young and acts even younger. Is it a sign that I’m getting old that I struggled to find patience with her angst and bad behavior? But it’s a sign of what an engaging author Ali Hazelwood is that it’s still an enjoyable story even though I strongly disliked the protagonist.

Male lead character sounds like a congested ghost

I always enjoy Lucy Parker’s books and I was engaged by the characters and humor in this one. But my god did I miss the narrator from the other books. This narrator is ok—if a little pokey—with female voices and non-dialogue prose. But her voice for the male lead is frankly terrible. She’s pitching her voice too low for her register, which means that she struggles to articulate consonants. It was often hard to understand the actual lines—I found myself turning up the volume when “he” was speaking, which was particularly unfortunate because her vocal choices for this character grated. Imagine someone trying to impersonate a ghost, but the ghost is congested. And maybe also constipated? I don’t understand why no one at audible hq had a word with the actress about her choices for this character—it’s unintentionally comic and makes the book difficult to listen to. Which is unfortunate, because Lucy Parker’s books are always a treat, and this one in the hands of another narrator would be no exception!

The “hero” is a psychopath.

I like the author and wanted to like this book but it creeped me out. The hero is cruel and it’s unpleasant to read the details of how he emotionally tortures the heroine.

Romantic lead is a childish bully

Narrator hilariously bad

I should’ve listened to the review that said that the narrator’s character voice for the hero sounded like Ebenezer Scrooge. I thought it couldn’t be *that* bad. My friends, it’s even worse. If you find Ebenezer Scrooge attractive—if he’s your fantasy romantic hero—this is the audiobook for you. Everyone else? The story is great but the narrator is impossible to get past.
