Historia
When Amanda Eyre Ward's 13-year-old son, Harry, dove headfirst into the world of sneaker culture, she found herself baffled by his obsession with flashy, expensive shoes that seemed like mere status symbols. Determined to bridge the gap with her teenage son, Ward reluctantly decided to embrace the mantra of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". As she shed her preconceptions and immersed herself in the quest to snag the latest drops, Ward discovered a community far richer than she had imagined.

A Dad who enjoyed it!
Revisado: 11-08-24
I almost didn't listen to this book. I'm not a sneaker guy. But I share a similar upbringing to the author, and as the Dad of two girls, I enjoyed the story of a parent trying to connect.
One tricky thing for the musician in me to overcome was crediting Duran Duran with writing the song Eye of the Tiger. What? That was a song by the band Survivor.
I bring this up to say it’s one of the few things I know about and was surprisingly inaccurate. I hope other parts were more accurate, but I have to leave that to others to comment on.
Regardless, the book’s message to know what your kids are into and engage with them over it is vital.

Exceptional!
Revisado: 12-20-20
This has so many more layers than I expected. The connection between the Regan Era War on Drugs Politics and the upcoming 2021 administration was shocking. This should be required listening for all humans — Specifically, all High School students.
This is a chance to hear the real and recent history. To learn from it as a way to participate in creating a better future. This book helps to understand how even the smallest amount of “privilege” can change lives. When we invest in education over incarceration, we can save generations of lives!
Some may be turned off by the term “innocent” in these stories. Some of the men profiled were admitted, successful drug dealers and hustlers. Others were innocent children caught in a web of corruption. None of those profiled were jailed for actual crimes that they committed.
Framing someone for a different unrelated crime is equally criminal. More so when it is committed by those who swear an oath to work within and uphold the law.
Credit should be given to everyone involved. This story is not about condemning the police. But providing police and communities the support, education, and means toward a better future for all.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Loved It!
Revisado: 11-08-19
I only wish it was longer. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't even know it was a true story. I simply love all things Alaska - so I grabbed a copy. I'm so glad I did. Midnight Son did not disappoint!
The book really inspired me to learn more about the Inukins. Also, now I can't stop listening to The Whipsaws! Read the book you'll know what I mean.
James is a wonderful story teller and narrator. I wish him kick future success - and look forward to future stories from him.
