Boring Boring Boring
Revisado: 08-15-18
Call me shallow but when I reach for a John Grisham book I am expecting an entertaining and engaging legal drama. This book is insufferably long and slow. It is an eco-trip described in minute detail, contrasted with a family dispute over a will drawn by a rich manipulative codger. The latter was more interesting, but not enough to sustain interest. I shut it down about half way through. Terrible.

Ready to binge the Series!
Revisado: 08-14-18
I started at the beginning with this Book 1 of the Kay Hunter series and now I am going to read all the others. I like the characters and the story was engaging. I enjoy police procedurals with female leads but do not want to be bogged down with too much detail on their personal or romantic lives. I can get that in a work of general fiction. This book hit the mark for me- enough to provide some insight but not so much that you lost track of the central plot line. The only negative for me was the narrator. I see that some readers love her so it is obviously a matter of individual taste, but I found her to be quite irritating. Her dialogue voice was very good, but the general narration drove me up the wall with her very measured and d-i-s-t-i-n-c-t enunciation of every word. I see she narrates all of this series however, so I guess I will just have to get used to it. Otherwise this was a great book.

Well written but too far-fetched
Revisado: 04-14-18
I liked the writing and unlike others, did not mind the references made about the main character's various anxiety related thoughts and behaviours. However, I prefer a story that does not strain credibility to the extent that this one does. Particularly outstanding on this front are the instances where attempts to build tension and suspense hinge on completing complicated tasks in a very constrained period of time. We are given regular count downs of how much time is left, and it is beyond absurd what Caroline is able to achieve in these time periods. It is just flat out impossible to achieve the things she does in the time allotted, without superpowers of some kind. Also beyond the limits of reason are her decisions to do all kinds of dangerous tasks on her own. She works for a big-time law firm with lots of resources -- do they not have access to professional investigators?? Why are lawyers out
in the field galavanting around on their own tracking down nefarious people and staking out dodgy characters? No reasonable explanation is ever offered for this. This kind of disconnect brought down this book in my ratings, though I would still give this author another chance given the calibre of the writing.

Narration Nightmare
Revisado: 05-25-17
I am only about half way through this book but I am thinking of abandoning ship because of the incredibly aggravating narration. Others have said the same, and I wish I had taken heed. The narrator speaks every single sentence like he is spewing venom. Every word is an angry, raspy snarl spoken with such dramatic urgency that it is utterly exhausting to listen to and a total distraction from the story. Why oh why did he choose (or was he directed ) to do it this way? It makes no sense at all. The plot thus far is actually quite interesting, and although none of the characters are particularly likeable that is not an issue for me. I am going to try my best to just grit my teeth and listen to more of it so I can see where the story goes, but it will take a heroic effort to endure more of this exasperating narration. Such a shame.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 04-27-17
I should have read the reviews and not just looked at the star ratings, because this is one of those love it or hate it kind of books. If you don't enjoy the fantasy genre you probably won't like this story, because the whole thing hinges on the ability of some characters to travel outside their bodies. If this concept leaves you cold, move on. If you are fine with it, then the next test turns on how much of a stickler you are for believable characters. Louise, the unfortunate victim in this piece, challenges both patience and imagination with her ridiculous gullibility and misplaced acts of conscience. Kind of reminds me of the character in the horror movie who insists on going down alone into the dark and ominous basement of a haunted house with nothing but a match stick and an IQ of ten. You want to scream "Don't go down there you idiot! and you may find yourself thinking or even shouting similar advice when confronted with Louise's various ii-advised and baffling decisions. I will say this though, the ending was unexpected, which is worth something.

Best book of the Summer
Revisado: 08-03-16
Totally engaging book. Very effective telling through the characters' individual back stories. My only criticism is that it was a little slow in parts with an over abundance of detail otherwise it totally eclipsed all the other books that have been recommended as a great summer read. Loved it.

Compelling story, great narration, interesting characters. Although quite predictable, it somehow succeeded in being very engaging. Not a deep read, but a nice long one, with everything neatly tied up with a bow in the end.
