Historia
It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself "Murderbot." But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Historia
At twenty-three, Michelle Ephraim was failing at everything. The only child of reclusive Holocaust-survivor parents who were dismayed by her literary studies, she found herself dumped by her boyfriend and bombing out of graduate school. Then, one night, she crashed a Shakespeare recitation party. Loopy from vodka and never having read a single line of Shakespeare, she was transfixed. Shakespeare, she decided, was the lifeline she needed.

Funny, honest, and moving
Revisado: 08-31-24
This is an engaging tale of a woman who discovers Shakespeare, and, through his works, discovers herself. Her taut, brisk text is brought to life in this enchanting presentation.

Historia
Moving back into her parents’ house with her teenage daughter had not been Georgia Thackery’s “Plan A”. But when she got a job at the local college, it seemed the sensible thing to do. So she settled in and began reconnecting with old friends. Including Sid. Sid is the Thackery family’s skeleton. He’s lived in the house as long as Georgia can remember, although no one, including Sid, knows exactly where he came from and how he came to be a skeleton.

Delightful!
Revisado: 03-25-24
The conceit (the animated, talking skeleton) works remarkably well. The characters are well drawn and engaging. The mystery is interesting. And the depiction of the life of adjunct faculty is spot on! Well worth a listen.

A sheer delight!
Revisado: 11-01-23
I have long loved this story. This month, I listen to the audiobook for the first time.
In particular, I listened to each chapter of the story on that day of the month. It was even more delightful than I expected, thanks to the skill of Matt Godfrey and the production team.

Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman explores these questions and more - from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang.

A solid collection of writings
Revisado: 09-17-23
Well performed, this comes across as a series of essays by Professor Lightman that were collected into one volume
I found that hearing this learned man of science and letters speak in a very direct and forthright way about -- not just the science -- but about what it might mean to us as human beings, was both engaging and educational.

Historia
Britain's Special Air Service - or SAS - was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II's African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel's desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: Given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war matériel.

Engaging, albeit at times disturbing
Revisado: 03-17-23
This work draws us into the story of the creation of the SAS by the British armed forces, the first special operations unit. The men who created and staffed this unit were extraordinary, strange, and … well … a little bit off. Despite (or because) of that, they had an impact on the the war far greater than their numbers would lead one to expect.
The narration is exquisite. There is a dry detachment to the text, which is badly needed at times given the horrific material being described. Those times are relatively few, and are scattered throughout the work. They are still horrific.
There is a reason that the US general Sherman said, “War is Hell”. By the end of this work you will agree. You will also be in awe of the bravery and audacity of the men of the SAS in World War II.

Wonderful, Enchanting!
Revisado: 02-22-23
The only thing better than reading “The Starless Sea” is listening to this production of it. The story is captivating, one cares for the characters, and (despite their journey) each gets the ending they deserve
