A 22-year-old cancer survivor and amputee, Terry set out from St. John’s, Newfoundland, in April 1980, aiming to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His first months on the road in Atlantic Canada and Quebec were not only physically taxing—he ran the equivalent of a marathon a day—but frustrating, as Canadians were slow to recognize and support his endeavor. That all changed when he met a young man named Bill Vigars, who, on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, led a campaign to ensure that every person in Canada knew the story of this outstanding young man.

OK. Even some Canadians cannot correctly pronounce “Newfoundland”, but you would think a professional reader would learn! And there were other pronunciation errors of Canadian place names. Agggghhh!! At least by the mid to the end of the book, the reader got the pronunciation of “Sault” in “Sault Ste Marie” correct. And he could pronounce “Port Coquitlam”; that can be a tongue twister.
Terry Fox has been written about and memorialized on film by lots of people. This story is a good, behind the scenes look at one of Canada’s shining events. It is well written with appropriate background, as the book unfolds, on the author and how Terry Fox affected him. However, this background does not overshadow the main event: Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.
