Worth sticking around for

It took me a couple of chapters to decide this story would be worth my time, but I’m glad I stuck around. The story jumps between four characters’ perspectives, though in the end, I feel like one of them was quite weak to the story. I usually don’t mind this type of storytelling, and overall, I think the author did a pretty good job. However, I felt like I lost my bearings to the story at the beginning of each chapter. I know that’s somewhat normal with stories that shift perspective, but on top of that, the story shifts back and fourth between 1945 and 1965. Because of that, the narrators should have added an extra second or two of silence after announcing the character and date.
Speaking of the narrators, they both did great! However, one thing threw me: there is a particular character that has a Scandinavian accent. The female narrator did it splendidly. However, the male narrator did not even attempt it when narrating that person’s voice, which made things confusing until I realized he, indeed, was the same character. It’s not good for a character to have, then lose, then regain his accent between chapters
Overall good story.
Warning: Some unnecessary foul language in the book. I wish books came with ratings or advisories of such.

I would call this low-key paranormal. This is not my normal genre, but I enjoyed it. The story is nothing mind-blowing, though it’s entertaining. Decent character development. Lots of adverbs. Overall really good writing.
The narrator did a great job. Good production.

Amazing premise. From there, it's downhill.

I am so sad to see such potential wasted. The premise behind this book is intriguing. I LOVE IT, and I think an entire series could be based off it. Unfortunately, it’s presented as a novella, which is driven by extremely immature kids full of hormones living as if they are adults. I ended up disliking every single character in the story. It’s full of sexual promiscuity and filthy language, which just removes and distracts from the part of the story that’s actually interesting. If only the author would have stuck to the main story. The author does a lot of telling, rather than showing. Full of adverbs and descriptions of emotions. Lots of unnecessary reminders of the rules of cloning. In addition to that, this story supposedly takes place over a century into the future, yet (apart from the ability to clone people), technology is the exact same as today.
The narrator is a fantastic actor. I really like him as a narrator. However, he could be much better at editing. There are a lot of mouth noises and background sounds in the recording. There are also some spots that he forgot to edit out—spots where he stops and clears his throat.
So, the redeeming quality that earns two stars is that the premise is brilliant. I actually think the author is a good writer. Hopefully she can polish her writing skills and become a great author. If so, I hope she will revisit this premise one day with, preferably with mature, adult characters.

The story is fascinating. I live in Wellington, and I personally know some of the people mentioned in this book, so to hear this all unfold in a surrounding, familiar landscape draws me in. Three things bother me. 1. There is filthy language in this book. I understand that Jackson and co. are not holding to my standard, but for those of us who love Tolkien as something to share with the family, Nathan should have been considerate. 2. The timeline jumps all over the place. Forward to production, back to conception, forward to premier, back to office deal-making. It’s hard to keep up, especially when names of lawyers are used quickly. 3. One more small thing: he talks about “the summer of 1998,” etc. But much of this story takes place in New Zealand. And much takes place in the USA. So, are we left to assume a NZ summer (December-February) or a USA summer (May-August)? We will never know.
Once again, all that being said, this is a fascinating story.
