As a professional financial coach/counselor, I can teach these basic investment principles to my clients, but J. L. Collins does such an excellent job of laying it all out so succinctly in the The Simple Path to Wealth that I usually recommend this book to my clients first so they can develop a basic understanding of the whole system. It's an easy read, and the appendix helps a ton with remembering all those things you heard while running or driving or doing the dishes. I recommend this book to everyone who even whispers "I want to start investing" into the wind.

Dr. Makary does such an excellent job of laying out all the various ways that the American healthcare system is more expensive than it needs to be, and also more comolicated and difficult than it needs to be. I always knew there was something wrong and this book really showed me whats wrong AND discusses how we can make it better. It does not tout universal healthcare at all, it simply focuses on reducing wastefulness and sleezy sales tactics. great read.

I feel like, if you're reading this book, you're looking for some insights, information, anything potentially new and helpful? Not only did I not get any new information, I didn't get any information at all. Unless there was some golden fleece hidden in the last quarter of the book, which frankly, I doubt.

Honestly, Schultz did what she set out to do. I learned without a doubt that employers will always choose profit over employee comfort, even when its blatantly illegal. She provided numerous examples spanning decades, and consistently enumerates the gains and losses in each case. I'm mad about it. Almost makes me want to change careers and be a judge.

Professionally, this represents a very important aspect of financial planning that I will need to consider for my clients in the future, because what they believe to be guaranteed, apparently is not. For the average American, their employer-pension is a major source of retirement income which they plan to live on for 20-40 years. Unfortunately, this has to be taken with a grain of salt. People don't always get or keep what they are entitled to.
