This was a nice break from the typical novels I download. It is well paced and interesting. I enjoy the documentary style of this original work. I hope they produce more of these types of series, I'm a fan.

This was disappointing and predictable at every turn. Not overly graphic but drawn out and the dialogue sounded so contrived. I actually was rooting for the bad guys in this one because I found the family so annoyingly oblivious and slow to catch on to what was happening to them. I really really wanted to return this one but I've never resorted to that before and wasn't 100% sure even how to do it, This was a waste of a credit. There are many many more titles more worthy with better writing, better narration and a far superior plot.

Seems Tedious at First but Stick with this One

It seemed to move to slowly at first, I wondered why the author was going into such detail until I realized it was all part of the character's development. This book is at times maddening, frustrating, tearful and rage invoking...all part of what makes it such a compelling story. It does stretch a little bit at the end but overall I enjoyed it and felt satisfied with what the author did. Deals with domestic violence, some graphic scenes but they are not excessive and are part of the bones of the story...a necessary evil. I would recommend this one.

Loved this author's writing style, it melded so nicely with the narrator's talents too. I felt transported to the plantation. It was very visual. The characters are likable and I was content that it did not end as nice and neatly as you might expect, for me it made it more credible. In the end I felt satisfied that the author answered most of the mystery. I will certainly add more of Attica Locke's books to my library.

The violence in this book is pretty graphic but add to that it is violence committed against a child, two children and that made it difficult to get through for me. The story had a lot of interesting elements and moved along well. The characters were interesting as well but the author really went into details on the murder, attempted murder and rape of a child and it was one of the few books I nearly stopped reading because of violence that at times seemed more excessive than it needed to be.

I thought this book was paced fairly well throughout and had some very suspenseful moments. It was engaging, you became invested early on in the characters and their stories which mingled in with the larger, main plot well. I would recommend this for anyone who likes some depth with their suspense. Even if you see it all coming by then end, which you likely will, you are still involved enough with the character and their inner dramas to see it through to the end.

Tough Subject Matter but Handled Well

The subject matter dealing with human trafficking is very tough in this novel however the author handles it all with restraint so you are not exposed to worst elements and details. Much is implied if only to move the story and tell the character's story. This is ultimately a story of survival and most importantly redemption. There are perspectives here that I've not experienced before and the writing is very well done. The narrator is excellent as well.

This one had a very intriguing plot and setting. I liked the characters, the sisters and their relationship. I enjoyed the way the author unpacked the story, a little at a time. I think it was an engaging read, that had a lot to offer. Well-written murder mystery, and the "why" is as interesting as the "who". I would have liked to have a bit more about the Jules life I think, how she transformed herself in the years of her sister's absence...that would be my only wish. This novel takes time to examine the lives behind the crimes and the relationships that were behind all the actions. I would recommend this one, absolutely. Narrator also does an excellent job of conveying the characters and the story line.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

There was a decent story here but it took too long to tell I think. It was hard to follow in places. I don't feel the credit was wasted but I hadn't enjoyed it as much as I expected too.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It moved too slow in places, too much time spent on elements that did not matter as much.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Martyn Waites?

Maybe.

Did Cage of Bones inspire you to do anything?

No.

Good but Not As Good as "Summer of Night"

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I really had high expectations because I loved Summer of Night so much. It had that "IT" meets "Stranger Things" meets "Stand by me" vibe. This book, a sequel to that one, lacks that same vibe. Even in the period of flashbacks, you don't get feel the same undercurrents that were so pronounced. Read Summer of Night first, then read this but go in with the understanding, it is a different feel and tone. Appreciate the author's talent, Dan Simmons is one of the best I've read in a long time.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I like the ending. I can't talk about it more without fearing I'd reveal too much.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Bronson Pinchot?

Yes, he was perfect for the main character's voice and did a good job on the other voices as well.

Do you think A Winter Haunting needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I do not see how a follow-up would work. There were, in my opinion, questioned never answered but the story, both the one when they were children and now this one, as grown-ups, seems to have been fully fleshed out if not fully explained.

Any additional comments?

Again, Dan Simmons is a great writer...a credit would not be wasted on this book, but it should be read after the Summer of Night.
