Flirting and false humility

love this series and couldn't wait for this one to come out and I'll probably get the next but what are they doing with Matty? EVERY female character is gorgeous, and they are all head over heals obsessed with Matty - even the ones that don't like him. flirting and his "but I'm in love, I'll never cheat" professions make up about 50% of this story - I mean he saves the life of one of these girls by kissing her. He kisses at least 3 of these "fan girls", cuddles with 2 others while he sleeps, propels the rumor that he is in a relationship with his teacher/sister thinking its funny all while constantly professing his devotion to his girlfriend who is okay with all of this. Another 30% of the story is his whining and false humility (I'm such a coward/you can't beat me). The remaining 20% of the story is what I loved about the 1st few books - great story, magic and characters. the narrator is incredible but wizard every female MUST have trope wears on you quickly and I fast forwarded through much of that.

I picked this one up namely because I love Zara Ramm as a narrator and I like fantasy. The only reason I kept listening was to try to figure out what was going on. the world build-up was not a build-up but more a slam, boom, a paragraph or two. And the overall concept, a naval fantasy? there are so many sub-genres now that I can't even keep track. I listened to the whole thing, have no clue what transpired and all I'm left with is Audible now thinking I love Naval Fantasies so that's taking up my recommended next listens. Not my thing but if it's yours, you may like this listen. Zara was great as usual.

I love the way this brought Super Powered to life. one of my favorite series that made me a huge fan of Drew Hayes. This being part 1 of 3 for Year 1, I just hope that I don't have to wait a year for part 2. This is definitely worth the credit or the $!

Good story but...

I could not get over the fact that the characters are in middle school here. That premise just couldnt escape my mind as the story went on and there is absolutely no reason for them to be that young here other than the author's choice. knowing that this is a YA read, I'd be okay with high schoolers at a minimum but 4th and 5th graders plotting murder and contemplating advanced concepts and tech?? seriously, everytime that it states 5th form (i.e., 5th grade or 10 year olds), and then talks about them being millionaires for the tech they invented or their appreciation for Jackson Pollack and I'm left just shaking my head. Really??? aside from that, great narration (though again, much older voice than the character age).

I couldnt wait for this one to be released (and I'm waiting for the 2nd installment of Drew Hayes' villain world with eager anticipation too). Reading through the reviews, already knowing they would be fantastic, I was still sceptical about all the "Perfect Ending" remarks. Seriously, it's been years since that many people have all unequivocally agreed on something in this country, so I took it with a grain of salt. They reviews are dead to rights - this was the perfect closing for this series. I've never felt this happy and satisfied with a favored series ending until now. Another book in this series would be too much. Immortalizing the characters at the point in there lives within the epilogue was perfect. I don't want to think of these brilliant characters in any other way than Mr. Hayes has penned in this book. A truly fun and touching read and listen. Thank you Mr. Hayes!

great story - unbelievable cast of narrators

I wasn't sure about this at first having never read the author and it turned out to be a fantastic find! unique plot, well developed characters (over the top at times but I think it adds to the satirical nature of the novel) and a truly exceptional cast of narrators (Especially Ms La Voy but that is to be expected). The interwoven time line was a little confusing for me at first but that's me and I was able to catch on quickly (hint that you probably don't need but helped me, the vignettes tell you the time line your on) . Don't let that deter you though, the book made me laugh and the characters, however satirical, will have you caring for them. For me, this audio book has joined the ranks of my two all time favorites, Anansi Boys and The Martian. Enjoy!
