Historia
Award-winning author and human rights activist Ishmael Beah brings us The Door to Tamba, a powerful story centered on a mining village in West Africa where the destruction of earth and pollution of life impacts the mind, body, and soul of communities. Hindolo, a storyteller, returns to his hometown after 30 years and recalls the solitary and formidable old man who opened his home to him and introduced a world of literature and imagination, which for many years, was his only escape. Hindolo begins writing the stories down on paper stolen from a nearby mine to share with his classmates.

Historia
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: Dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time.

An Unfortunate Purchase
Revisado: 01-21-24
Unfortunately, I purchased this book instead of waiting to use a credit for it, so I couldn't return it. So, like a good girl told to clean her plate, I decided to try to finish it. I kept waiting to be intrigued but it just never happened. An irritating narrator did not add to its charm. Now I'm trying to remember which friend recommended this book so I can wreak my revenge! I can only repeat what one of my writing teachers once said of a student's work, "Just what is there about any of your characters that would make me want to go on reading about them?"

One of my favorite books ever . A master teller of tales. Beautifully presented by the reader.
Revisado: 06-08-23
This book calls out to be listened to more than once. Such rich detail and the narrator is perfect. I kept turning back and relistening to entire chapters as the rich descriptions held onto my thoughts well into the next description. The only other book that ever had this effect on me was Alice Walker's Possessing the Secret of Joy.A+ for this one

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

While most of us might take dictionaries for granted, the process of writing them is in fact as lively and dynamic as language itself. With sharp wit and irreverence, Kory Stamper cracks open the complex, obsessive world of lexicography - from the agonizing decisions about what and how to define to the knotty questions of usage in an ever-changing language.

Historia
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

I Loved This Book!
Revisado: 04-25-19
At very first listening, I thought perhaps I could not bear the narrator's British accent, but those trepidations very quickly passed. This book was an utter delight. It was never predictable and my interest in it never flagged. I am now going to search out every other title written by this author. Both author and narrator did not disappoint. A+.

I could not listen to this book beyond chapter 13.
Revisado: 04-16-18
What would have made Educated better?
This book started out in an interesting manner, but soon grew to be one act of violence after another. I kept hoping that these acts would end but they grew progressively worse. At chapter 13, I had to stop listening. I kept waiting for the unreasonable male directives and the injuries they caused to end and for there to be some ray of hope in this book but it was just one punishment after another. I really wanted to like the book. It is well-written but I just couldn't deal with the content.
Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. I thought her reading of the book was excellent. I just couldn't stand the content.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, horror, revulsion, sadness, frustration.
