Historia
Nearly a hundred years ago, two wealthy and privileged teenagers—Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb—were charged and convicted in a gruesome crime that would lead to the original “Trial of the Century”. Even in Jazz Age Chicago, the murder was uniquely shocking for the motive of the killers: well-to-do Jewish scions, full of promise, had killed fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks for the thrill of it. The trial was made even more sensational by the revelation of a love affair between the defendants and by defense attorney Clarence Darrow.

Detailed Historical Account and More things you've never known about Leopold and Loeb.
Revisado: 10-26-24
I loved this book. The authors have done their research and poured through the local history and archives, and I learned so much more reading it. I've lived in the Kenwood area for 20 years as an adult and have always been enthralled by the big yellow mansion on the corner of 50th and Ellis. Once I learned of Leopold and Loeb, I became hooked. After watching many documentaries and reading a few books on the murder, Nothing But the Night transported me into that time. I appreciate the accurate details without leaving out the atrocity of the crime, what led up to it, and after. This book will not disappoint you if you’re interested in true crime history and social context. The narration was a bit too “bright” and artificial to me. A more regular, conversational tone would have sufficed instead of the “broadcasting” style.

Detailed and Wonderful Victimology
Revisado: 07-12-24
I completed this book in a couple of sittings. The details regarding Zana, Ethan, Maddie, and Kylie were priceless. I feel that I got to know and connect with them since I have a young daughter who will be entering college. I really appreciated the details of the suspect as well and could visually imagine the layout of the scene. I have watched many true crime shows that have dissected this case and this book is a must to get acquainted with the details of the crime, a possible motive, and an intimate deep dive into the lives of the victims and the impact this crime has had on the community.

Historia
In the number-one New York Times best seller Mindhunter, John Douglas, who headed the FBI's elite Investigative Support Unit, told the story of his brilliant and terrifying career tracking down some of the most heinous criminals in history. Now, in Journey into Darkness, Douglas profiles vicious serial killers, rapists, and child molesters. He is straightforward, blunt, often irreverent, and outspoken, but takes pains not to glorify any of these murderers.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

My opinion: I don’t understand the low ratings regarding narration here. The narrators were very passionate. I think their illustrative emotions of passion and pain were a requisite for this story and conveyed the true tragedy inherent throughout the book. Well-done.

Revisado: 09-20-22
I love how Billy Jensen pulls you into his thoughts, sights, and process. His method begins with telling a story about dad’s lessons that laid the foundation of his curiosities which led to a passionate career. I’m an avid listener of the Murder Squad, so I might be biased but I live for the details and insights that accompanies crime. I love the process but this book also offers a story of context and vision ( almost as if you’re watching him do the work to deconstruct and solve the crime. Can’t wait for the next journalistic contribution Billy Jensen will so graciously give. There’s so much to learn, hear, and feel in this work.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, chief of the Bureau's Behavioral Science section. Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Fascinating History of Turn of the century Exposition Chicago
Revisado: 09-06-21
I grew up in Englewood and pass 63rd and Wallace everyday to grab my dopio con panna expresso from Starbucks on 63rd and Halsted a couple of city blocks down the street. What stands there now is a mural that depicts Bronzeville’s late 19th Century Black business district culture, a US Post Office and an Aldi grocer right across the street. The idea that the murder hotel once stood in this space is marveling. The story is well researched, its writing and narration compelling. If you’re one who appreciates historical context and vivid detail, you will love this book. The story is more than HH Holmes himself and his crimes; the political, social, physical and mental context of Chicago at that time makes this story ever so rich and satisfying. What an amazing historical treat. ENJOY the journey through.
