Historia
Infused with magic, shadows and starlight, the powerful godblades were believed to be lost nearly half a millennia ago, when the Godswar ended. Now, however, one has been found by the unlikeliest of wielders: Sampson Gaard, a blind but ambitious prince with something to prove. The only question is whether he controls the blade or the blade him. With an insidious evil lurking in the shadows, the answer may very well determine the fate of all Kingfall.

Exemplary Writing, Characters, and Story
Revisado: 06-15-24
This book is just splendidly done. It is the beginning of an epic, with multiple storylines progressing at once. I will be gobbling up this entire series.

I played eve online for several years. This series is like a narrative for null sec space. It's a very good story. So good, in fact, that after a 6 year break I am playing eve online again.

Historia
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. An Interesting Deep Dive
Revisado: 08-12-22
After finishing the Last Hunter series, I picked this up to see what else Jeremy Robinson had written. What I have come to realize is that this author, like so many fantasy and science fiction authors of the past, is using one story to discuss a more meaningful story. The Last Hunter was really a story about the power of forgiveness. Infinite, though a science fiction story, is really a story about the meaning of life and love.
This is what fiction has historically been: a wrapper around a discussion of a deeper truth.
The story is unique, and the characters are well done. If you don't mind the exploration of the "deeper truth", you're in for a fun ride. This book left me thinking, and I think that's what the author was hoping for.

Historia
I am the reincarnation of a dark god. I cannot escape that now. The prince of demons come again. And I am hunted. The Fomori have a prophecy about my return, and have been so kind as to dispatch the Morrigan herself to slay me. She's even forging a special divine sword. Their armies of beastmen and giants march upon Hasra, and the ailing empire is in no shape to hold. They need new troops. They need us. My friends and I are being sent off to the other Catalysts we control to gain more magic so that we can resist the Fomori advance.

extremely well done
Revisado: 07-13-22
I always enjoy Chris Fox's storytelling. The story keeps moving and you get to know the characters at the save time. It has been fun watching him tell a completely different story backed by his Magitech game, too.
I have been listening to this series for hours everyday. I'm not sure what to do now that I have to wait for the next book.

A Missed Opportunity
Revisado: 11-26-21
Yes, as you can tell by the other reviews, this book has differences from the others. Julie gets to be the main character in a story that is pretty good. There is humor written in, but the auduobook's downside is what hides it. What is the downside?
Well, as a person born and raised in South Eastern Tennessee, one thing that I really enjoy in Larry's books - and his usual narrator - is its kind treatment of Southern speech and language. It is deep in that not only do the characters have Southern accents, but use southern phrases and humor.
This story is about Julie, our best example of an independent southern gal, only the narrator sounds like a city girl. Even when the expressions coming from Julie's mouth are deep fried Alabama slang, it is spoken without any contractions, every word ending in 'g' actually pronouncing the 'g', and every long 'i' sound spoken as though we actually use a long 'i' sound down here. We don't! So many funny jokes are ruined because even readers from California know that Julie wouldn't say them that way.
Had the narrator taken the time to respect Julie's character enough to "southern Julie up", we would have enjoyed the book well enough, I think, even though it is a departure from the norms we are used to in the other books.
I really, really wish that I had read this one on Kindle, because I might have appreciated it more. If another audio version came out that honored Julie's heritage a bit, I would probably listen to it and give this book another chance. Julie is, after all, quite an amazing character.

Historia
Only a handful of people in the world know that mankind's magic comes from a living creature, and it is a refugee from another universe. The Power showed up here in the 1850s because it was running from something. Now it is 1933, and the Power's hiding place has been discovered by a killer. It is a predator that eats magic and leaves destroyed worlds in its wake. Earth is next. Former private eye Jake Sullivan knows the score. The problem is, hardly anyone believes him.

Very deep contribution to the series
Revisado: 05-01-21
This book really pulled everything in the series together. The author managed to represent each character well, pull off a crazy underlying plot, and lay out some significant philosophy all without letting up on the action at all.
There is a lot to chew on here regarding authoritarianism and its tendency to start with good intentions but end up in a dreadful place.
The narrator continues am excellent job here. I especially liked his rapid fire rants of Faye's thoughts as she does her thing.

Historia
Dark fantasy goes hardboiled in Book II of the hard-hitting Grimnoir Chronicles by the New York Times best-selling creator of Monster Hunter International. The Grimnoir Society’s mission is to protect people with magic, and they’ve done so - successfully and in secret - since the mysterious arrival of the Power in the 1850s, but when a magical assassin makes an attempt on the life of President Franklin Roosevelt, the crime is pinned on the Grimnoir.

Good from start to finish
Revisado: 04-24-21
I really enjoyed this second book of the series. Using an alternate history adds a lot of opportunity for the author and he makes great use of them to be a little bit humorous and significantly philosophical, too.
As a person born and raised in southeastern Tennessee, I really appreciate the use of language that really feels southern, not just in the way words are spoken, but how they are used. The author and narrator work well together here, because the way people speak feels very genuine.
There are some nice twists that make their way into this book that you can see stayed in the first one. The whole story comes together nicely.
Now I'm off to burn another credit on the next book. I can't help myself.

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Takes just a bit to get going, and then just does not stop. I love the alternate history, the characters, and the very interesting take on where magic comes from. I'm gonna binge listen all my credits away on this series.

I listen to audible when I run, walk, cook, eat, etc., but very rarely do I listen while doing nothing... except for this book, which was so good that I would just sit and listen. Like the earlier books, the characters and culture are so well done. This series is my favorite of all time.

Nice finish to a series with a big heart
Revisado: 04-07-21
This is a fine ending to a delightful story. If you have made it this far, you just have to listen to the last book. Everything is sewn up very nicely, and there's even a bonus at the end with the back story of a certain "sort of" villain.
This is not heavy stuff, so it is a perfect break from something like Sanderson while you are waiting for more brain cells to regenerate. At the same time, the characters are likable and well made, so it's not "just" a break from heavier stuff, either. It has a proper place and is worthy of the time and credits spent.
