Sci-Fi fun and thought-provoking
Revisado: 11-21-24
I was scared that the Nazi stuff was going to be too disturbing.... and it borderline was... but just in time, Ed and Kelly showed up. I ended up loving this, a lot. As a cult survivor and huge fan of The Orville, this was my kind of thought-providing fun sci-fi adventure. Thanks Seth, and to the narrator who did a pretty great job as well.

In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls". While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying chapters in modern American history.

Long awaited and unique point of view
Revisado: 08-12-23
This is the account of the youngest member of the Manson family as we have long wanted to hear her perspective and insights. it is so wonderful to hear where she is now. Although she does include some details about how she unraveled the belief in Charlie, I would have liked to know more about her therapy sessions and how she got through it.

Historia
From the woman who is credited for launching what we know as the celebrity focused, “brand” driven, social media obsessed popular culture of today, comes an honest and surprising memoir that reckons with that truth, and shows that there is so much more to Paris Hilton than you might believe. This extended edition includes a bonus chapter detailing her motherhood journey.

So much more enjoyable than I imagined
Revisado: 06-01-23
This is such an enjoyable listen. I am not a "Little Hilton" but I did watch the documentary and became more intrigued in Paris as a person and entrepreneur. This book overdelivers in terms of what it is like to have boundless energy, a delicious sized income and appetite for partying and ideas and love for animals, and what fashion means to her. I've never heard fashion described so lovely... And I am a jeans and a t-shirt person! This book also includes very detailed accounts of abuse which is so sad... And yet so prevalent. It's important for our culture to understand how these things happen and persist and Paris does a great job of articulating this complex experience with all the emotions, coping skills, and revelations that it comes with. I loved this book because she is so different from me in many ways, yet I can relate on another level. I love this book because it has so much fun and color and sound and glitter. I love this book because it speaks of pain and how to overcome it.

Historia
This episode is sponsored by Better Help. It was the early ‘70s and life was weird. War was still going on in Vietnam, and those back in the US of A were struggling with political, societal, and economic changes. One day, Diane Benscoter passed a van where some strangers were giving out bananas. She grabbed a snack and avoided making conversation with the van people. Shortly after, she was on a five-day trek from Omaha to Des Moines with those banana enthusiasts, who were in fact Sun Myung Moon enthusiasts. Next thing you know, Diane’s cut off all of her hair, done some fasting, and has ...

An Everyday Cult follows the arc of Buglion's journey through young motherhood into a group that welcomed her but also captured her mind, her heart, and her money. She shows us how a mind and psyche can be compromised by a controlling leader, using techniques that fly under the radar of human awareness—and she implores listeners to wake up to these ever-present abuses of power. Gerette vividly describes a personal journey that became increasingly treacherous, culminating in tragedy. In the telling of her story, she exposes the impact of cultic manipulation on daily life.

I'm a big fan of cult survival stories. This author does a great job of sharing their state of mind while in the organization, and contrasts that with valuable learnings and reframing.

a fun suspense, humor, sci-fi treat!
Revisado: 12-11-22
I loved this book/listen. The author did a really cool thing by jumping back and forth between our two main characters which were all really likable. I love the villain. I enjoyed the Hitchcock references a lot. The voice actor did a great job with so many different characters and different accents. The story paints a picture of multiple worlds really well.

Historia
Comedian Kate Willett was married to a woman and thought she'd never have to deal with men again. That is, until she found herself dumped, suddenly single, and mystifyingly...mostly attracted to dudes. Like any good comic, she was inspired to investigate, and thus ensued her hilarious, sometimes high-stakes personal research into the world of men, culminating in a beautiful, difficult romance.

When Alice Greczyn's parents felt called by God to exchange worldly employment for heavenly provision, they followed their faith into homelessness with five children and a cat in tow. Homeschooled and avowed never to kiss a man until her wedding day, Alice had plans to escape by becoming a missionary nurse—plans that were put on hold with the opening of an unexpected door: the opportunity to be a Hollywood actress. What followed was a test of faith unlike any she had prepared for, one that forced her to learn to survive without the only framework for life she had ever known.

spectacularly introspective and well written
Revisado: 09-06-22
As a former Jehovah's Witness, I found many similarities in her struggle to rely on her own intuition and inner judgment. I also took religion extremely seriously, while others around me did not. I so relate to her recovery as well! This is very well written and explained. Gosh, I wish I wrote some of the sentences in this book!

Through hard work and, well, tenacity, Jack Black and Kyle Gass catapulted themselves into rock superstardom. But before they were the only two members of the best rock band on earth, they were just Jack and Kyle, two theater students finding their footing in Los Angeles. The D’s trajectory was a slow and steady rise from clubs to a guest spot on the hit show Mr. Show on HBO to albums to film to headlining festivals across the globe. But it wasn’t without its pains. This is their story. These are their Words + Music.
