Historia
As a pair of young scholars research the lives of two Victorian poets, they uncover their letters, journals, and poems and track their movements from London to Yorkshire - from spiritualist seances to the fairy-haunted far west of Brittany. What emerges is an extraordinary counterpoint of passion and ideas.

A slog unassisted by the narration
Revisado: 11-06-24
Shocked this book has the reputation it does. Is it Byatt pulling a joke on us? Banal, insipid main characters with a couple of engaging supporting characters but mostly this book is melodrama. The narrator's American accents are unconvincing and distracting.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Relies on tropes but well researched and interesting
Revisado: 07-30-24
Many stock, one-dimensional characters. Did read YA to me generally. Fascinating history of translation and use of the author's knowledge in that area--I learned A LOT. Hangs on a very thin premise--the magical manipulation of silver. The narrator really overdid the evil characters, as if caricatures. Beautiful job by both the author and narrator with Letty and Victoire.

Well-conceived and told story
Revisado: 06-18-24
The performance is overwrought and the performance of women's voices almost offensive. The story is great and deserves much better. I really cared about Martin. The author's attention to detail makes this story feel very real. Recommend.

Beautiful story, mismatched narrator
Revisado: 09-05-23
The story is beautiful, complete, memorable, a song. I did not think the narrator did a good job with Bunny and Sunshine, and thought he was much too stentorian in places, as if a parody of the old evening news anchors.

Could not finish
Revisado: 01-09-23
I found the adaptation of Dostoevsky unconvincing, the characters stereotypes, and that, half in, I still had no empathy or care for any of them. (Maybe Katherine.) The performance was guttural and overly dramatic and forced and really unpleasant. A great idea that floundered and left me, surprisingly, cold.

Who says that you can't have it all? Adventure, romance, science fiction, fantasy, horror, and fine literature? Infinite variety - that is what you find here. Classic Literature has never been presented so approachably. You will savor the chills from Edgar Allan Poe, then smilingly shake your head as a man dupes an entire town. You will hear how Sherlock Holmes solves a case for Bohemian nobility, then marvel as a man destroys his life over a piece of string....

Historia
Jane Austen's first novel - published posthumously in 1818 - tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen's fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical novel pokes fun at the gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex.
