I knew going in that the style of writing was different, but I thought I would be able to get into it based on the subject. I just really couldn't. The narrator delivered flat, but based on the material she had to work with I'm not sure if that was a style decision. Either way, it wasn't for me, sorry

I fully believe that the seed for this story was born in Wyatt Kane's 8th-grade mind.

Ok, it's a comic book story. I get it. And that's what I kept in mind as listening. It's a light-hearted romp with a lot of adolescent testosterone-filled fantasy. And it was a welcome break from the normal stuff I listen to. In the end I liked it and am going to give book 2 a try.

The main character reminded me a lot of the typical anime male virgin characters. Awkward, clueless, but gets all the girls anyway.

Chris Graves was an excellent pick as storyteller for this series. He inflects the right nuances at the right time. He does a good Ty, and I think the Irish accent he gave to the deerkin was great.

The subject of the book is tragic. I am now scared to death of getting Alzheimer's. The performance was ok. While not trying to disparage Mel, I don't think he was the right casting choice. He didn't convey enough emotion with Joey's parts. I know the character was immature, but there were scenes that Mel could have really pulled off but failed.

A classic western with a bit of hoodoo thrown in

Revisado: 12-23-18

A decent book. There was just the right bit of hoodoo magic thrown in, but not enough to throw it off track to be a western. Could easily fall into the "weird western" genre. The protagonist's hat was so white you could easily be blinded by it, and I like the heroes in my westerns to be this way. Too many heroes in books and movies these days have terrible flaws that sometimes you don't know if the protagonist or the antagonist is more evil.

Pros: The story was very good. The narrator was superb, as his accent was perfect for the story. The hero was a classic good guy.

Cons: There was some social activism hidden in the book I hate to be preached to in books. But the listen was so smooth I could afford to ignore the bit of SJW thrown innocuously into the text.

TERRIBLE interstitial music ruins performance

Story is King. You either love it or hate it. There is only a little of King's fall into into full SJW in the writing at this point, so it's not too bad. The narrator did an amazing job. Unfortunately, loud music is blared into your ears between scenes and to highlight important parts of the story. The music drowns out the narrator at the worst of times, and is annoying at the best of times. Take whomever decided on this out back and shoot them. Seriously. It's that bad.

About an unlikely heroine caught up in an international plot to destroy the world. What's not ever truly explained is how she got into "the business" to begin with. I never thought she was actually qualified to do any of the things she was doing in the book. But there she was, successfully pulling off feat after feat. I'm wondering if there might be prequel somewhere out there where this is explained. Working bits of Civilization-style games into the plot was genius. Nice touch. The ending was pretty satisfying.

J. Scott Bennett is one of the first narrators that I glommed on to. He never disappoints me. If you find an audio book with his voice behind it, you are in for a hell of an experience.

A modern day look at UFO mythology

This is a book that fills a nice niche - it's a modern day look at what possibly could explain the current UFO mythology. I love how the author has integrated thousands of years of lore from various religions, along with news more current, to reinforce the story line and the modern state of UFO knowledge.

Overall, it was an entertaining listen. Andrew Tell was spectacular, as usual. This is the second book of his I’ve listened to. His female voices are believable, and he has a wide range of character voices.

Great book on the history of Ponzi schemes

Before I listened to this book I had a vague notion of what Ponzi schemes were. After listening to example after example in this book, I now know exactly what they are, and how to spot one. The book goes to great lengths to make you understand the nature of a Ponzi scheme, as well as going into detail of the 10 worst schemes in history. You will be surprised how many there were, how they were implemented, and how their perpetrators got away, or didn’t get away, with them.

I had no complaints with the narrator. He was clear and concise and his voice is perfect for non-fiction work.

Turns the bible on its head

I was grew up Catholic and received all the sacraments, but lately due to personal tragedy, I’ve drifted from God. Because of this I thought I would be open-minded when it came to religion. And hence, it would be perfectly OK to listen to this book.

Boy was I was wrong. At first, I was ok with it. But as time went on I started squirming in my seat as I listened. This book turns the entire concept of God and Jesus on it’s head. If you are religious, this book is definitely not for you. It’s going to laugh in the face of everything you have been taught, believe, and have faith in.

If you aren’t religious, then you will have no problem with the subject of this book. Getting past THAT, there is a LOT in this book. It’s dense. It’s creative. And it’s campy. The author takes a LOT of leaps to connect dots that have heretofore never been connected before.

I have no complaints with the narrator. His comedic timing was spot on and his female voices were realistic. His unique voice, while older, seemed to suit the story just fine.

Masks aren't supposed to feel!

Revisado: 02-06-18

Mel is a Mask - someone who wears a mask that completely hides their face so their expressions can’t be betrayed. Masks are unbiased arbiters whose opinion is the law of the land. Their judgment in matters of arbitration is final and respected.

in the opening scene Mel is kidnapped by a vicious troll… and then is subsequently rescued by a masculine stranger. Nothing wrong with that, you might say. In fact, sounds a bit like a romance should! But as a Mask, Mel is not supposed to have feelings as this is part and parcel to being a Mask. The first thing that Mel notices about her rescuer hero is that he smells… well, wonderful - to the point where it lights a fire between her loins. Literally. No, not literally, but to the point where she immediately attacks her rescuer with kisses. Hot steamy kisses.

The seed is planted there between them and they can’t forget each other, no matter what happens to them in the book. Disasters, trolls, kidnapping, murder, heartbreak, and intrusive parents. Mix in a little inter-species breeding and you have a very interesting story.

It’s a good book. At its heart this is a book about a girl wanting her life to go in a different direction than her parents planned. Layered over top is an epic adventure. I liked the concept of the Masks, how they are the judicial system in Ms. Kaplan’s world she created. I think a lot more could be done with their backstory in future books.

TJ Richie’s performance was very good. She did a great job with the male voices, and was fantastic with the dialog.
