What I loved is how throughly and expertly the Author dives into the How's, Why's, and Consequences of the American Civil War, from the Mexican American War, to the beginning of Reconstruction.

Every single time they find a group of survivors, find a potential safe zone, or anything that could improve their situation, something goes wrong. Constant helicopter crashes, hordes of undead overrunning towns the moment they arrive, people being so blithering incompetent and getting themselves in situations they shouldn't. Even towards the end when they find a ferry, a wave just to happens to come along, and wrecks it before they can reach it.
