Revisado: 11-23-24
Honestly, I couldn't finish it. After reading more scholarly historical accounts of more substantial historical figures, this seemed gossipy. I was 15 when DK died and remembered her from TV. The more I read here, the less I liked her. She may well have been murdered, but by the end of the first half of the book, I didn't care. She was talented and successful, but I didn't see so much integrity as self- promotion. I admire her as a woman in a male-dominated field. I believe she may have been out of her depth when she got involved with her Cuban sources. But the overall celebrity culture is tawdry and petty when you get too close. Maybe I'm the wrong consumer for this book.

Amusing and weird
Revisado: 10-27-24
I am not really a Simpsons fan but have seen it a few times and always thought the writing was good. I wanted something light and distracting. I was relaxing with my eyes closed when I heard Cartwright list inspirational figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and L. Ron Hubbard? My eyes literally flew open. Cartwright is talented, pleasant and generous with praise. She doesn't push on her Scientology beliefs much but just enough to creep me out a little. It's a nice little book by a pleasant person whom I would never want to meet.

Wonderful narration. Mediocre stories.

fun but...
Revisado: 10-13-24
The narrator was a perfect match for the material. His dramatic skills made the stories clear despite the archaic writing style in some cases. I only wish they had changed the sequence of stories. The final story is the darkest in terms of the ending. The book left me with a bit of pessimism. The story is a classic but should not have been the final selection.

Historia
For over half a century, Banco Popular was one of the most profitable banks in the world—until one day, in 2017, when the Spanish bank suddenly collapsed overnight. When investigative journalist Gareth Gore was dispatched to report on the story, he expected to find yet another case of unbridled capitalist ambition gone wrong. Instead, he uncovered decades of deception that hid one of the most brazen cases of corporate pillaging in history, perpetrated by a group of men sworn to celibacy and self-flagellation who had secretly controlled Popular and abused their positions there.

fascinating and disturbing
Revisado: 10-06-24
This book was distressing in many ways but difficult to put down. I know Opus Dei has officially denounced it which makes me think it exposes more than a little truth. The narrative certainly dovetails perfectly with what we know about The Federalist Society, Project 2025 and the extremism of the current US supreme Court.
The sad truth is that this is likely to ignite anti-Catholic sentiment in the same way that Netanyahu ignites anti-Semitism. We all suffer when extremists hi-jack cultures.

Historia
Mary Tyler Moore made her name as Dick Van Dyke's wife on the eponymous show; she was a cute, unassuming housewife that audiences loved. But when screenwriters James Brooks and Allan Burnes dreamed up an edgy show about a divorced woman with a career, network executives replied: "Americans won't watch television about New York City, divorcées, men with mustaches, or Jews." But Moore and her team were committed, and when the show finally aired, in spite of tepid reviews, fans loved it.

Nice tribute
Revisado: 05-19-24
This made for nice, light entertainment. I especially liked the stories about the women writers. I was baffled by the fact that the author reverted to referring to those writers and the the women in the cast as "girls". As someone who was already a feminist before that show aired, it was pretty demoralizing. The narrator loses points for butchering the line "shot down over Ecuador Junior". That was a clever little note in the show and her reading killed the humor. Other than that, a nice way to revisit an old classic.

interesting story and well presented. I wasn't familiar with this story and while tragic, there were some unusual features that made it a good listen.

Bad narration, good story
Revisado: 04-14-24
I generally like Dateline stories. But I am so tired of the stylized pattern of intonation that seems to be the trend among professional narrators. Almost every sentence has the same inflexion pattern. It is lazy and for me detracts from the words. I tried for a while to ignore it but it now drives me away from the shows I used to enjoy.
