It is not a bad book, but I was expecting more based on the high ratings. There is plenty of action and intrigue, and the main character is appealing in a rascally sort of way, but I never felt that he was in any real jeopardy. He becomes a powerful adventurer very quickly and, it seems, with hardly any effort. I like to see characters struggle a bit more to attain their goals. The narrator did a fine job, creating many distinct voices for the male characters, but he fell flat with the female characters. All his female characters sounded nearly the same. I think most readers will like this book. It just wasn't quite right for me.

A good but not great entrant in the series. I felt too much time was spent on the haremism and Felix's relationship to his women. Very little of it advanced the plot and only served to slow things down. Still, the story had its moments and really picked up at the end.

This novel does not follow a traditional story structure. Much of it is pure exposition, with the main character telling things to another character that the reader needs to know. But if you are a fan of the original trilogy, that information is fascinating and fills in many blanks in a satisfying way.

This is one of the most original science fiction novels I have read. Liu's ideas are new and not recycled from other authors. The ending was inspired, profound, and surprising.

I needed a good book to listen to on a long trip and I knew Sanderson would deliver, and I was right. His books are highly formulaic but, man, they hook me every time.

A cute space yarn. Sometimes a little too cute. But it's bolstered by appealing characters and smart dialogue. The performances were spot-on, but I did have trouble sometimes distinguishing between the two shipboard female characters. Their voices were just too similar.

Middle Earth History Lesson

There is a reason J.R.R. Tolkien never published this novel while he was alive. Even with the material added by his son, Christopher Tolkien, The Fall of Gondolin reads more like a synopsis than a story. Little effort is made to develop characters or build suspense. Key events are skimmed over rather than fleshed out, and all tension and emotion are wrung out of the prose by the necessity of keeping the majestic narrative flowing. And yet it is that majestic narrative that saves this book from obscurity. Tolkien's words are beautiful and a joy to listen to, especially as performed by Samuel West. Tolkien nerds will probably overlook the book's shortcomings and appreciate the depth added to the Middle Earth lore.

Any book by Brandon Sanderson is a good book. I would not rate this among his best, however. It's entertaining, sure, but it was slow to hook me. Unlike his other books, I found it difficult to become emotionally invested in the characters. It was only in the last third of the novel, when the plot twists started to pay off, that I really began to enjoy it.
