Historia
Johnny Cash was a poor sharecropper's son from Arkansas who became one of the most influential figures in American music. In the 1950s he embarked on a music career that took him to the heights of fame and wealth but also to the depths of addiction and despair. From these tensions Johnny Cash created a haunting music, exploring the dark side of himself, and others, in a voice that sometimes sounded as old as the Grand Canyon.

Historia
Before cell phones that fit in the palm of your hand and slim laptops that fit snugly into briefcases, computers were like strange, alien vending machines. They had cryptic switches, punch cards, and pages of encoded output. But in 1975, a young engineering wizard named Steve Wozniak had an idea: What if you combined computer circuitry with a regular typewriter keyboard and a video screen?

Irrepressible
Revisado: 05-16-08
Steve Wozniak is clearly himself in this book, a shy, puckish, kid who is still a quasi-adolescent at an advanced age. Yet he is clearly brilliant. One is amazed at the companies that turned down his design that became the Apple. A case of casting pearls before swine. Overall, a great listen.

Historia
In 1983, Muhammad Yunus established Grameen, a bank devoted to providing the poorest of Bangladesh with miniscule loans. Believing that credit is a basic human right, not the privilege of a few, Yunus aimed to support that spark of personal initiative and enterprise by which the poor might lift themselves out of poverty forever. Grameen Bank now provides over $2.5 billion in micro-loans to more than two million families in rural Bangladesh.

People matter
Revisado: 07-09-07
This is a wonderful book that illuminates life (especially for women) in one of the poorest countries of the world, and one man's largely successful struggle to change things. He exaggerates and misstates some things, but everybody with a conscience should read it.

There are a few interesting tidbits that from time to time spice up this catalog of vapid nostrums. Find something better to read about India. I highly recommend Shantaram, or something by VS Naipaul.

Historia
Author of the extremely popular "Dear Economist" column in Financial Times, Tim Harford reveals the economics behind everyday phenomena in this highly entertaining and informative book. Can a book about economics be fun to read? It can when Harford takes the reins, using his trademark wit to explain why it costs an arm and a leg to buy a cappuccino and why it's nearly impossible to purchase a decent used car.

Historia
A History of the Middle Ages is the amazing story of European man in transition. It is a dramatic chronicle of 1,000 years of political, social, and economic transformation beginning with the dissolution of the classical Mediterranean civilization and ending with the first flowering of the Renaissance. It is also the story of two new religions, Christianity and Islam, both of which were destined to dominate the mind of every person in those new civilizations arising in their wake.

real history
Revisado: 07-09-07
This is beautifully done, using music and other sound effects to transition from one section to another of this extremely well-written volume. But the expert in history will value it more than the amateur, for the detail will likely cause the mind of the ordinary reader to wander.

The author is right that there is much exaggeration by environmentalists. But he thinks the remedy is exaggeration on the other side. It is no help in sorting out the conflicting claims on this issue.
