Hard hard sci-fi. Huge scope. Little character building. You won't know what's coming. Watch the netflix series too

Historia
Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to coexist peacefully as equals, without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent.

The character building is minimal but the plot and world building more than make up for it. If you liked the first two books, you will like this too

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Historia
Eddie Chapman was a charming criminal, a con man, and a philanderer. He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began. In 1941, after training as a German spy in occupied France, Chapman was parachuted into Britain with a revolver, a wireless, and a cyanide pill, with orders from the Abwehr to blow up an airplane factory. Instead, he contacted MI5, the British Secret Service.

I listened to this after having been blown away by The Amateur Spy, which is probably fhe best espionage story I ever read, fiction or nonfiction. This book is absolutely worthwhile, but I was disappointed to learn at the end that I had just heard an abridged version. I wanted the full book!

When CIA agent Claire Saylor is told she'll be going undercover to pose as the dowdy wife of a stuffy academic who has posited a controversial new interpretation of the Quran's promise to martyrs, she assumes the job is a punishment for past unorthodox behavior. But when she discovers her team leader is Paul Bridger, another maverick within the agency, she realizes that the mission may be more interesting than meets the eye - and not just for professional reasons.

Ok, but not Fesperman's best
Revisado: 03-19-24
for me, the book didn't really make the characters come alive, so there didn't seem to be much advantage to reading this fictionalized account of the eventing question as opposed to reading some of the very good nonfiction accounts out there. I have read several of Fesperman's books. This is my least favorite among them. The Arms Maker of Berlin is my favorite.

Buddhism has captivated many millions of people around the world, its vitality and adaptability enabling it to transform the civilizations of India, Southeast Asia, Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan, and also become a lively component in the cultures of Europe, Australia, and the Americas. But have you ever wondered how a religion that doesn't even have a god could have accomplished this?

Good but doctrinal, not cultural
Revisado: 01-30-24
You get a good overview of the different Buddhist thinkers over the centuries, but not much about the lives of ordinary Buddhists or their culture and customs. I doubt that the average Buddhist would know more than 25% of the stuff in these lectures. But if that's what you want, the professor teaches in an engaging way

Bestselling author Dan Pfeiffer dissects how the Right Wing built a massive, billionaire funded disinformation machine powerful enough to bend reality and nearly steal the 2020 election. From the perspective of someone who has spent decades on the frontlines of politics and media, Pfeiffer lays out how the Right Wing media apparatus works, where it came from, and what progressives can do to fight back against disinformation.

Love Dan, didn't love the audiobook
Revisado: 08-01-23
I always enjoy Dan's smart and funny commentary on Pod Save America, but this book just felt to me like it was written hastily, with minimal research, and downright awful narration. I couldn't even finish. Which is disappointing because he's normally such a good communicator.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Best spy thriller--amd it's all true
Revisado: 07-23-22
If this were fiction, I would think it was the best spy thriller I had ever read--except that I might have thought that a few parts were a bit unbelievable. The fact that this is a true story makes it that much better. Truth is stranger than fiction!
