The supernatural elements are not my thing but I'm not knocking stars because I listened to the clip, and first thing mentioned is the Hellmouth angle so I knew going in, there was probably going to be more.
If it's not really your thing either, well, I still enjoyed the story so much that I used it to encourage me to clean the attic as my reward: it worked. I cleaned that thing out and didn't complain near as much as I normally would have because I would have done just about anything for a few more minutes of these two characters (as evidenced by cleaning out an old disgusting attic. IN THE HEAT. It WAS a hellmouth in there for fricks sake - sans hot sweet guy! Ugh. Now I feel cheated... ;D )

As some mentioned, this doesn't have the nonstop laugh out loud moments of MB, but it absolutely stands on its own as a sweet romance that hooks you in and carries you along.
Note to author: That cheese sounds absolutely disgusting =O

EXCELLENT duet narration experience with cute RomC

This has all the highlights one expects to enjoy in the RomCom genre: HUMOR, romance, and a sweet story. I loved the snappy dialogue, I loved that the hero had to do the pursuing and was working uphill because of his past. I sped it up because I wanted to get to the gravy of the story faster but it didn't deter from the experience.
And on that note.
The narration is done in Duet style. If you're not familiar with it, a man reads all the lines by male characters and a woman for all the female lines. So far, this is only the second narration team that has pulled it off AWESOMELY (totally a word) and I loved it. I loved their voices, they did a grand job at differentiating characters, and their accents were a delight to hear.

After hearing him read El Diablo I learned that Marcio Catalano can growl Spanish in my ear all day and I'll love him for it - turns out, he can growl Alpha all day and I'll love it even more.

This book was so twisted.

It was fabulous.

This series is DARK. It's like no "shifter" book you've ever read either - because IT'S NOT ACTUALLY ABOUT SHIFTERS - technically, these are labeled "humans" but they have qualities that are definitely... let's say this is kind of sci fi, far into the future, dystopian etc etc WALK IN WITH YOUR EYES OPEN. If you're here because you like werewolves, or you like alternate universes/dystopian/sci/darkfantasy, or dark romance there are elements you'll enjoy in this one, but you should know going into it, it's not your average ANYthing, because there's NOTHING average or normal about this story.

Is it ROMANCE?? For Dark Romance lovers you'd probably say yes.

For someone who has never delved into the dark you're in for a shock.

Until book 1 kind of jumped me, I wouldn't have thought this was my kind of story. I ended up devouring the series (book 3 isn't on audio yet) and was so happy to find that book 2 had been added to audible, YAY!

Cannot wait to see what the author does next with this universe she's built.

After Ruby Dixon's Alien Barbarians got me hooked on Alien Romance ebooks, I've been trying out audiobooks in the genre attempting to find a series/author that I like. Most of them fall short in the story department BUT THIS ONE!! Scarlett is a new author to me, and now I need to hit up her backlist because WOW!!! WOW! The premise was DIFFERENT - really, really good, these two falling in love but... they are slaves, stuck in a power struggle between "masters" and have very little in their own control. Gladiators fighting for their freedom, their nations - seriously, major props for layering an INTERESTING story to go along with the romance!!

This book could have gone REALLY dark, and since I am a dark romance fan, I would have been happy for it to go that way, but it didn't venture far into that territory, though the subject matter was much more serious than I was expecting it to be AND I WAS INCREDIBLY PLEASED FOR THAT! Again, GREAT concept, the author wrote this story beautifully, the narration was good, I've enjoyed Addison Spear's work before and will again. I AM SO HAPPY TO FIND A NEW AUTHOR YAAAAAY! This audio was an Audiobook Boom listing, and I requested it hoping for an enjoyable couple of hours; I got MORE than I hoped for, I LOVED it!

I was so intrigued by the premise that, even though at the time (when the ebook first came out) I didn't think Sci Fi was my thing.
This is the book that changed my mind.
I loved it.
(And in fact, sci fi dark romance books are now my main reads)
I could talk about the bones of the book, but you have the blurb up there.
I'd love to dissect the unique mechanics of this couple's relationship, but I can't do that without spoilers.
Here's what I can tell you:
I WAS SO EXCITED to find this come out in audio!! And Kirsten Leigh is FABULOUS --- I was already familiar with her work (Preppy with Lance Greenfield anybody? *happy swooon* and Leigh has read Listed under this author's penname) and her voice talents shine beautifully with Hold too. It's funny; I prefer to read when I can, I just don't have the time anymore. But when I love the book, and the narrator is amazing, it can rival the experience of curling up and physically reading a book now - and Kirsten pulled that off with Hold. There is a line in this story where the heroine's voice is supposed to break in an emotional moment, and Kirsten did it *perfectly* --- I clapped. Seriously. I love great audiobooks, and this one was such a treat; I am beyond thrilled that I can listen to it whenever I want now --- and, it's worth noting, this book made it to my All Time Favorites list. The list of books that I'd want with me if I was stranded on a deserted, primitive island.
(A primitive island with electricity so that I can charge my kindle & phone of course or I'm gonna need everything in paperback...)
THAT'S how much I love this book.

I got addicted to Lili's writing with Magnificent Bastard (which was hilarious) and even in this dark trio of books, her witty banter & one liners come through --- but if you are familiar with her books, you know she can go dark too. Lots of great twists, and the plot was different than the dark romance books of late. I actually started with book three for this series, got hooked, and went backward. I don't recommend starting that way but I tell you what, I hope I've learned my lesson and PAY ATTENTION to what order I download in next time, because I spoiled the f bomb out of it for myself - yet, I was so intrigued - I had to go back and find out how THAT all came to happen.
This narrator team is GOLDEN. I am so happy they have a big backlist each and thanks Kristen Ashley - now I've got them on preorder too!

More intense than angsty, style takes getting used

I'm a newbie to Callie Hart's work, but I kept seeing the promos and raves for this book after it first came out in ebook format, and honestly? That cover totally caught my eye (and now that I've listened to it, the cover ties into the story, so aww, that was a neat nod).

It was a good thing this book DID come so highly recommended. Unfortunately, although I was initially caught up in the sample enough to request to review this audio, when I really got into it, it seemed to start tooo slow and the style was throwing me off.
However, the entire time it is building layers, giving you a clearer picture of past events, of present situation, of the character's deepest, darkest, innermost turmoil & desires and piece by piece it all unfolds into a beautiful, sad story of two people who find each other again, who never really stopped loving each other.

I look for a couple of things when I go searching for a dark romance fix: I want DARK elements - and in this book: CHECK.
I really, really need the hero to come to *care* for the heroine... in his [twisted] way... eventually: CHECK!!
I WANT A STELLAR AUDIO: CHECK, CHECK, CHECK!!!

This duet was different from Zaverelli's Boston series and that was fine - I wasn't sure what to expect, and I had a great time. I wouldn't have recognized this as a Z book right off the bat but the things I enjoy about her stories are all present in this one and you will need book two. I requested this audio so that I could have the pleasure of listening & reviewing, and I am so happy I did!! Another hit!!

I liked the concept of this story, and I was intrigued with the history and research the author obviously did to fit to the time period - little details like her headlamp; I had no idea - that was just neat.

The overall feel was Laurann Dohner-esque --- and that's not a bad thing. It's just not my thing lately.

I've learned that if one book isn't exactly your cup of tea, give a different kind a try - and this author has several works available in a variety of genres - even dragons, which I love ♥

This audio was the pick for my audiobook club, and I am really glad they picked it -- Everyone was RAVING about it, yet I was struggling through the first ten chapters, so confused I was backing up in case I'd missed something (I wasn't, the listener is supposed to keep on their toes, guessing/extrapolating) and I was thinking I was listening to a totally different book...
THEN.
It took off, and I had a great time.
From a creative standpoint, I can see why the author chose to start the beginning the way she did. If you're on a relisten, it will make absolute sense, too.
As a 1st time listener, I'd have just skipped the first ten chapters and gotten all my backstory (which was really sweet, btw!) and never be so close to DNF, because that would have been a shame
