Historia
Even among iconic frontiersmen like John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, and Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger stands out. A mountain man of the American West, straddling the fur trade era and the age of exploration, he lived the life legends are made of. Here, in a biography that finally gives this outsize character his due, Jerry Enzler takes this frontiersman's full measure for the first time—and tells a story that would do Jim Bridger proud.

Interesting and fast-paced
Revisado: 04-06-25
Living in the West where Bridger was a scout contributed to my interest in his life story.
The author did a good job of including so much of JB's work without bogging down or leaving out much. He made Bridger's personality come to light in an engaging way.
I frequently ground my teeth at the arrogance and sheer stupidity of the politicians and military men who thought they knew better than this experienced, wise scout & guide.
His life, what he did and saw of early America was profound.

Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-21-25
Whole story seemed awkward, disjointed. Weird, dissonant musical transitions seemed overly long and did not contribute to moving the story along. It felt maybe under-rehearsed? Some attempts to produce intended sound effects failed completely.

Historia
As a doctor, I walk a dangerously delicate balance of being compassionate but not overly invested. The same is true in my personal life - love is a luxury I can’t afford. It isn’t until Dr. Westin Grant breaks down all my walls and offers me a future, I find myself wondering if I’m brave enough to risk my heart. When who I was and who I’ve tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

Neurotic main character

Didn't like how long the lead character stewed in her own juices without going for help.
I think the story line could have been tightened up, made shorter, more realistic.

Historia
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

The psychological depth of the characters
Revisado: 03-05-25
It was somewhat confusing in the early chapters. It helped to look them up on Wiki to have a good way of keeping them straight.
Eliot did an excellent job of giving me a taste of a place like Middlemarch and a feast of the intricacies of self-deception.
The issues of class and snobbery still exist today on small communities.

Attention is not just receptive, but actively creative of the world we inhabit. How we attend makes all the difference to the world we experience. And nowadays in the West we generally attend in a rather unusual way: governed by the narrowly focused, target-driven left hemisphere of the brain.

The depth of the content
Revisado: 02-16-25
I liked the discussion of the human brain and its functions. It made me hit pause a number of times to just sit with what I was hearing. Explanations of how the brain shapes perception explains a great deal about the world I see evolving in front of me today.
I have already purchased "The Master and his Emissary" for the very deep dive McGilchrist 's research.

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

I loved the complexity of the characters own stories and their various relationships. I especially likes the subtle bread crumbs left along the story line, and found myself backing up to re-hear a passage knowing it mattered.
An engaging, beautifully written book.

Historia
If F. Scott Fitzgerald was the hero of the Jazz Age, Edna St. Vincent Millay, as flamboyant in her love affairs as she was in her art, was its heroine. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Millay was dazzling in the performance of herself. Her voice was likened to an instrument of seduction, and her impact on crowds and on men was legendary. Yet beneath her studied act, all was not well.

Very well written
Revisado: 12-23-24
Despite its length, from start to finish, I found myself engrossed in the story of EM's life.
The details from letters, comments from other poets of her time, editors, sister Norma's input, Milford's attention to detail captured the essence of EM.
The reader's neutrality assured that she never pulled attention from the story.
