Historia
By age twenty, at the height of the Jazz Age, Trudy Ederle was the most accomplished swimmer in the world. She’d won Olympic gold and set a host of world records. But the greatest challenge remained: the English Channel. Only a few swimmers, none of them women, had ever made the treacherous twenty-one mile crossing. Trudy’s failed first attempt seemed to confirm what many naysayers believed: No woman could possibly accomplish such a thing. In 1926, Ederle proved them wrong.

As a father of all girls, I have a certain bias for the adventure and achievement and possibilities in women. I wish I had known about Trudy many years ago however I am now inspired by the great thing that she did.

How is it that people still work for change after continuously seeing the worst of humanity and experiencing the most demoralizing setbacks? What keeps them going? It is that spirit of justice that rises up "like a war horse," as Myrlie Evers-Williams famously said. It is a sense in the hearts of people who hunger and thirst for righteousness. In this book, award-winning author Jemar Tisby will open your eyes to the "pattern of endurance" in the centuries-long struggle for Black freedom in America.

Historia
A significant number of Americans, especially evangelical Christians, believe Earth and humankind were created in their present form sometime in the last 10,000 years or so - the rationale being that this is (presumably) the story told in the book of Genesis. Within that group, any threatening scientific evidence that suggests otherwise is rejected or, when possible, retrofitted into a creationist worldview.

Easy read, very informative
Revisado: 02-23-24
I had heard much of this information in the past, but this book was very completely and easy to read. I will always recommend it as the first resource for Christians considering evolution for the first time. While clear in its disagreement with young earth creationists it does not shame or degrade them. Overall it presents an excellent case for why evolution is true and can be embraced by Christian’s.

Historia
Beloved contemporary Christian musician Rich Mullins lived his life with abandon for God, leaving the spotlight to teach music among a Navajo community. An accident cut his life short in 1997, but his songs and ragamuffin spirit continue to teach many. In honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Rich's homegoing, this edition of Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven delivers an intimate look at the experiences that sparked praise hits and the values behind his Christ-like candor.

Historia
Since the publication of the first edition of Critical Race Theory in 2001, the United States has lived through two economic downturns, an outbreak of terrorism, and the onset of an epidemic of hate directed against immigrants, especially undocumented Latinos and Middle Eastern people. On a more hopeful note, the country elected and re-elected its first black president and has witnessed the impressive advance of gay rights. Critical Race Theory is essential for understanding developments in this burgeoning field, which has spread to other disciplines and countries.

From New York Times best-selling author Rachel Held Evans: a must-listen for anyone on the journey of doubt, deconstruction, and ultimately faith reborn. Eighty years after the Scopes Monkey Trial made a spectacle of Christian fundamentalism and brought national attention to her hometown, Rachel Held Evans faced a trial of her own when she began to have doubts about her faith. Rachel recounts growing up in a culture obsessed with apologetics, struggling as her own faith unraveled one unexpected question at a time.

Such a good thought provoking book
Revisado: 02-18-23
I have heard Rachel quite numerous times but am just reading her books. I have been on a faith deconstruction journey since about 2016. This book will be one of the markers on that journey. Releasing the Bible from the stranglehold of literal interpretation is very freeing.

Christian’s should read this book!
Revisado: 01-29-23
I always love when an author narrates his own book and this did not disappoint. The church of Jesus suffers the more myopic it becomes. And the USA church is very myopic. I have been challenged recently to broaden my understanding of the church relative to geography and time. Dickson does a great job of letting us understand the good and bad of our history.

Historia
Christianity didn't have to become the dominant religion in the West. It easily could have remained a sect of Judaism fated to have the historical importance of the Sadducees or the Essenes. In The Triumph of Christianity, Bart Ehrman, a master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, shows how a religion whose first believers were 20 or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some 30 million people in just four centuries.

Useful for Christians
Revisado: 07-30-22
There were a couple important themes for our day. The evangelical churches thirst for power and desire to use it to manipulate people to behave right is not new. Throughout our history there has been a part of us that errantly believed in this path to success. During the Christian persecution we advocated for tolerance and freedom yet many did not advocate for the same once powerful. Secondly the author accounts for the growth and triumph of Christianity by one on one conversion by the people by slow steady growth not by large campaigns. They had a religion that was DESIRABLE to those outside rather than DISTASTEFUL

Revisado: 04-24-22
I became a Thomas Rhett fan because of my kids. They introduced me and I came to love so many of his songs. This story of their lives and their love is so authentic. They shared the good and bad and how they overcame challenges. It was a feel good for sure but so inspiring to me as my marriage faces some big transitions in the coming years.

What I liked the most was the innovative use of the media. Kudos. I most connected with the the mom and dad. Ziggy had a good ending though. My heart ached with Rachel and dad. Good job.
