Historia
The life of Urbain Martien - artist, soldier, survivor of World War I - lies contained in two notebooks he left behind when he died in 1981. His grandson, a writer, retells his story, the notebooks giving him the impetus to imagine his way into the locked chambers of Urbain's memory. He vividly recounts a whole life: Urbain as the child of a lowly church painter, retouching his father's work; dodging death in a foundry; fighting in the war that altered the course of history, and much more.

Beautifully Written
Revisado: 06-24-24
As others have mentioned, this is not a quick story. I think it’s disservice to this piece to consider it a war story. That is part of the story, sure, but this seems much more literary fiction to me.
Gorgeous descriptions. Deep themes. Slow and a bit meandering in spots. Overall, though, it’s a lovely read.
Only downside for me as a listener, though, is the assumption I understand the spoken French. I feel like I missed out on a number of critical moments. Oh, well. C'est la vie?

Crazy-Inventive Storyline
Revisado: 04-02-24
I loved this book. The story hooks you HARD from the opening and doesn’t let up for ages. When it does, it does so with a needed splash of humor after that emotional drag race of a beginning.
Haywood has a gift for creating engaging characters, putting them in ridiculous, painful situations, and then making you squirm in your chair — laughing and crying — as they try to work themselves free. Chaos follows.
Buy it. You’ll love it. But if you don’t, consider sticking with the self-help, vampire romance, or whatever boring drivel turns your crank. This book does not play well within genre-defining guidelines.

Historia
They say Black Dow's killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand smiling by while he claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

Dialogue. Yeah, it a book about barbarian battles.
Revisado: 02-04-24
I really enjoy Abercrombie’s storytelling and this book has lived up to all I’ve read so far. Many interesting characters, all with their own drives, strengths and weaknesses. But the dialogue is what stands out me — including the inner kind — and that’s not a common thing to find on the sword and sorcery shelf. Only one real gripe or wish: one of the character’s from the last book transitioned into this one … but he went from being interesting and complicated to a two-dimensional thug. I understand why, I think, based on his journey in the last book, but I would have really appreciated seeing into his head a bit more in this story instead of just making him a hulking prop.
Like I said, though, that’s a minor wish. Overall, loved the story. Looking forward to more.

Not what I expected — just a bit better!
Revisado: 11-19-23
Confession: I’m a Haywood fan. So I was really looking forward to this release and testing to imagine what nutso world he can up with this time. What I wasn’t expecting was a cavalcade of terrific wink-wink-nudge-nudge treats for loyal readers of a number of different genres. The story moves, the dialogue is fun, and a fourth wall or two is broken along the way. Looking forward to the sequel!

This series needs to be on HBO
Revisado: 07-12-23
… or Netflix … or wherever it would be produced in a manner that faithfully represents these outstanding characters and the brilliant storytelling.
Everyone of these books has riotous action, outrageous humor and moments you can’t decide between crying or howling in laughter.
No one does this genre (whatever it is) better than R.R. Haywood.
Narration by Joe Jameson is spot on as usual. It’s a huge cast of characters, but he keeps them all instantly recognizable. Honestly have no idea how he does it.

Historia
A new landscape was formed after the storm, and with it the promise of a new beginning. One race to dominate this land. One race to survive. Words were uttered beneath the Saxon while Howie fought the undead. Words that brought a whole new pressure. To be relentless and unceasing. To charge forward and never give up. To do what it takes to survive. That pressure was building, and it became too much. Howie faltered, losing his mind as they ran through the fog and sought the doctors so desperately needed.

Taking a darker turn
Revisado: 07-01-23
I adore this series. This installment is where, I believe, things start taking a darker turn — which is a crazy ironic thing to say if you’ve read everything this team has already gone through. It seems to be a truly pivotal day, though, in the growth of some of the core characters. I’m hear for all of it.

Historia
Gabriel Delling might call himself a professional con artist, but when walking superstitions start trying to bite his face off, his charm is shockingly unhelpful. It turns out living nightmares almost never appreciate a good joke. Together with a succubus who insists on constantly saving his life, Gabe desperately tries to survive a new reality that suddenly features demons, legends, and a giant locust named Dale - all of whom pretty much hate his guts. And when an ancient horror comes hunting for a spirit locked in his head, Gabe finds himself faced with the excruciating choice between death...or becoming some kind of freaking hero.

Fun listen
Revisado: 06-23-23
Enjoyed this and interested to see where it’s heading next. Appreciated that the protagonist doesn’t simply discover he’s uber powerful and kick ass. He mostly gets his ass kicked and pushes through anyways. Would agree with some reviewers about the campy over-the-top voice on a particular character, but I would disagree that it affects the over listen or value of the story. Give it a shot.
