Dan Stevens does a fantastic narration job
Revisado: 02-17-25
Great listen for fans of Agatha Christie. Dan Stevens' narration is excellent and helps the audience keep track of the different characters amd really get into their emotions. The tension and horror of the story builds and will keep readers guessing until the very end - like all good stories from Christie.

Cozy mystery
Revisado: 11-02-24
A cozy, small town mystery with great characters, a mystery within a mystery, and generational secrets... I couldn't stop listening! The narrator does a lovely job and had me hooked. Very excited for the sequel to come out next spring.

Pop history with all its defects
Revisado: 12-19-23
This book is largely a waste of time. The author takes great pains to stretch it out into an appropriate length, but he ultimately doesn't have very much to say. The history of the Oxford Dictionary and the two characters at the center of this book are certainly interesting, but there simply isn't enough primary evidence or historiography to make the length of the book necessary. The audio book's runtime is further padded by a list of additional books to read (many of which would probably be better books to read for anyone with more than a passing and casual interest) and an interview with the author. Finally, as a pop historian with no historical training, the author makes several choices I found distasteful and unexpected. In his own voice, not quoting any source, the author repeatedly and degradingly referred to prostitutes as "whores" ... which hardly constitutes professional or academic writing. He regularly sensationalized Dr. Miner's mental illness as "madness;" despite offering an evolving understanding of the schizophrenia that plagued Dr. Miner near the end of the book, the author prefers the sensational terms that should arguably not even serve as hooks for professional writing, much less be repeated throughout the book.

Historia
The early summer of 1914 was the most glorious Europeans could remember. But, behind the scenes, the most destructive war the world had yet known was moving inexorably into being, a war that would continue to resonate into the 21st century. The question of how the Great War of 1914 began has long vexed historians. In a gripping narrative, Fromkin shows that hostilities were started deliberately and that two wars were waged, one serving as pretext for the other.

Other titles provide a better read
Revisado: 04-06-22
If you're interested in the start of WWI, I recommend Sean McMeekin or Christopher Clark over this title. Both provide more detailed accounts of the events leading up to the war and have more original ideas. Fromkin's book reads as an elementary review of the subject and draws more on the work of other scholars than adds to the existing historiography itself.

Historia
Chris Dubbs tells the fascinating stories of Edith Wharton, Nellie Bly, and more than 30 other American women who worked as war reporters. As Dubbs shows, stories by these journalists brought in women from the periphery of war and made them active participants - fully engaged and equally heroic, if bearing different burdens and making different sacrifices. Women journalists traveled from belligerent capitals to the front lines to report on the conflict. But their experiences also brought them into contact with social transformations, political unrest, labor conditions, and more.

Lots of amazing women and their contributions to the profession of journalism, as well as the contemporary American understanding of WWI. It's a quick read and I would definitely recommend if you're interested in WWI and/or women's history. Bernadette Dunne is a great narrator!

Historia
In the watershed year of 1919, world leaders met in Paris, promising to build a new international order rooted in democracy and social justice. Female activists demanded that statesmen live up to their word. Excluded from the negotiating table, women met separately, crafted their own agendas, and captured global headlines with a message that was both straightforward and revolutionary: Enduring peace depended on recognition of the fundamental humanity and equality of all people.

I loved it! The narrator does a good job pronouncing non-English names and words, but does read kind of slowly. I listened at 1.20 speed. The book is well-written, the narrative is engaging, and I learned so much and about women I'd never heard of before!

Historia
The Middle East has long been a region of rival religions, ideologies, nationalisms, and ambitions. All of these conflicts are rooted in the region's political inheritance: the arrangements, unities, and divisions imposed by the Allies after the First World War. Author David Fromkin reveals how and why the Allies drew lines on an empty map that remade the geography and politics of the Middle East. Focusing on the formative years of 1914 to 1922, when all seemed possible, he delivers in this sweeping and magisterial book the definitive account of this defining time.

The narrator pronounces most words correctly, but consistently mispronounces "Muslim" - which was distracting to say the least. The book itself is very British-centric.
