Historia
Welworth Garden City in the 1940s is a forward-thinking town where free spirits find a home - vegetarians, socialists, and an array of exotic religious groups. Chief among these are the Children of Osiris, led by the eccentric High Prophet, Eustace K. Mildmann. The cult is a seething hotbed of petty resentment, jealousy and dark secrets - which eventually lead to murder. The stage is set for one of Inspector Meredith's most bizarre and exacting cases.

Historia
"Already it looked as if the police were up against a carefully planned and cleverly executed murder, and, what was more, a murder without a corpse!” Two brothers, John and William Rother, live together at Chalklands Farm in the beautiful Sussex Downs. Their peaceful rural life is shattered when John Rother disappears and his abandoned car is found. Has he been kidnapped? Or is his disappearance more sinister - connected, perhaps, to his growing rather too friendly with his brother's wife?

Long form mystery
Revisado: 09-04-24
If you appreciate a highly detailed slowly developing mystery, this book (and Bude) are for you. This was written at a time when if you needed to see a portrait, you'd have to borrow the key for the house where it was on display, and visit it in person. A much slower pace, which is reflected in Bude's writing style.
But, if you're looking for simple, straight line solution, this won't be the best choice.

Historia
In the Welsh borders, isolated by heavy snow and flooding from the thaw, cut off from telephone access, a tragedy has occurred. Old Dr Robinson known to be 'a menace' on the roads has met his end in a car crash, his big saloon thrown from the track down the steep hillside. But when the police arrive there is more to the tragedy than meets the eye: why was there a second body - an outsider to these parts - in the back of the vehicle?

I'm not a prude, but I sure appreciate these old mystery authors who rely on character, setting and prose rather than sex and violence to get published. This one's a real page turner with an excellent ending.

Historia
Detective Inspector C.D. Sloan knew there would be trouble when he was called in to the student sit-in at Calleshire University. The dons were nervous, the students excited - a clash of some kind seemed inevitable. But what did happen was totally unexpected. First was a most peculiar theft from a dormitory room and then the discovery of a man found clutching at one of the columns of the Tarsus cloister - bleeding slowly to death and able with his parting breath only to utter one enigmatic phrase.

Excellent reader. Complicated story line.
Revisado: 03-20-24
A lot of characters, a lot of red herrings, and a motive that was totally not predictable served to make the solution less than satisfying. On the other hand, the writing is above average and the reader is stellar so over all, a very worthy listen.

The narration is not good
Revisado: 03-01-24
The story is fine, and typical of the fomulanfor this series, but the narrator is way over the top. I know it's good to differentiate between characters and imbue them with personality as written, but the interpretation of Eatl Hugh is really too much. I typically like David Thorpe's reading but I'm going to have to finish thos one in print.

Historia
Who would want to kill a nun? That was the problem facing Inspector C.D. Sloan of the Berebury CID when the body of Sister Anne was found at the foot of the cellar steps at the Convent of St Anselm. Sloan soon found that interviewing half a hundred black-habited sisters as potential suspects for murder was no easy task - especially when he realised that, to him, one nun looked very much like the next, and every sister had an assumed name - and a past...

excellent narration
Revisado: 02-22-24
the reader was excellent and the story engaging. the author's opinion about women who join holy orders was a little off putting, and the fact that the male characters, including the protagonist, kept bemoaning how sad it was for "attractive women" to become nuns was irritating, but the story was fast moving and kept you guessing until the end.

Historia
Mordecai Tremaine's hobby of choice - crime detection - has left him in need of a holiday. A break away from that gruesome business of murder will be just the ticket, and the picturesque island of Moulin d'Or seems to be just the destination. Amid the sunshine and the sea air, Mordecai falls in with a band of fellow holidaymakers and tries to forget that such a thing as foul play exists. He should have been wiser, of course, because before too long, villainy rears its head, and a dead body is discovered.

wonderful protagonist
Revisado: 01-06-24
I have fallen in love with Mordecai Tremaine. He's refreshingly different from the standard amateur detective without being overly eccentric. The writing is solid, no dead ends that leave you wondering if they were just included to make up page count. I do become weary of the author's propensity for unnecessarily detailed descriptions of all the women characters physical appearance, but it's typical of this genre written at the time these are written. Unless how a character looks is necessary for the story, such detailed descriptions are off putting and I simply skim through those sections.
John Curless was exceptional. I'll be looking for other books read by him.

Carole Seddon's trusty Renault is one of her most treasured possessions. So when it’s vandalized, there's only one person she will entrust with its repair: Bill Shefford, who’s been servicing the vehicles of the good citizens of Fethering for many years. But how could something like this happen in Fethering of all places? Then a note is shoved under Carole's kitchen door: Watch out. The car window was just the start. It appears that she’s been deliberately targeted. But by whom, and why?

Another excellent adventure with Carole and Jude
Revisado: 08-02-23
......Spoiler Alert......
FINALLY! Carole and Jude foresaw the potential for danger in confronting the bad guys and planned accordingly. I cheered when the police showed up because the women had planned for the obvious outcome of their confrontation.
Weird side story with the man whose wife is in a wheelchair "to punish him" and the fact that he was "in love" with Carole was hysterical. I would have loved to hear more of Carole's most inward thoughts about that situation.
I have come to think of Carole and Jude as friends and however much Carole's idiosyncrasies irritate (some) readers, I think that's because most of us are, if we're honest, more Carole than Jude.
One of the best things about the audio version of these books has been the readers: Geoffrey Howard (aka Ralph Cosham) and then Simon Brett deciding to take the job after Cosham died. Who better to put voice to characters than the author who created them?

The unrivalled Albert Campion returns to solve another shocking murder - classic crime fiction at its very best. J.S. Lafcadio, the painter, is dead. He wanted lasting fame and he left instructions to his wife for one painting to be exhibited every year after his death. Eight years later in Little Venice, a group of friends and family gather to view the painting. They are treated instead to a murder....

less Albert than others
Revisado: 04-18-22
Although there was less Campion in this story, the parts where he took center stage were masterful.
Allingham's ability to set a scene and develop character is truly remarkable.
I really like this "reader" a lot. He is able to differentiate between characters seamlessly and I never once was startled by a jarring characterization. I'll be searching for more books read by Francis Matthews.

Wonderful sense of place
Revisado: 03-29-22
One important component of an enjoyable cozy mystery for me, is the locale and how well the author is able to set that scene.
Allingham is a master at creating an ambiance without making it obvious she is doing so. You are given a sense of place that is as vivid as a photograph and you never feel like it was forced at you.
David Thorpe does a decent job of differentiating between characters and I am becoming used to his, in my opinion, poor ability to reproduce the female voice. Other than being rather jarring at times, overall I enjoy his performance.
